To me, the term "left" means "statist", or advocate of big government, while "right" means the opposite. Do you agree with that?

Yes I will ....
But I was not the one who used that term ... I use low information liberal.
I am aware what the original term liberal meant ... it use to best describe my political point of views but today it means low information person or marxist.

They gain power by taking the Freedom and Liberties of the sheeple! Thus the dumbing down of Americans, this is why indoctrination in our school systems is so rampant. You cannot convince the high information folks of their illegal agendas. So, you dumb the rest of the population down, especially the youth and make them sheeples who simply do not know any better.

And, it's not just political ads. Basically the entire MSM is in on it as well as Hollywood. Look at the coverage of Benghazi and Fast and Furious or even social issue like the Gosnell trial. How many shows on TV today have either indirect or direct political over tones?

I can agree that apathy is a major factor. But there are other factors at play. What do you think of these?

1. The fact that a major segment of the American media is now part of the American government, allows the government and its politicians to take actions they would not otherwise. The actions and in-actions of the current administration are a perfect example. Without a diligent and truth seeking press, government and politicians are uncontrolled. And the American people are not told the truth.
2. We also have many politicians and government bureaucrats who care only about themselves. I believe this is a factor too. The immorality and dishonesty by the political class is very damaging.
3. And lastly but fair from least, a major factor is the terrible and heinous affects of Liberalism, or Leftism if you prefer. One of the many harmful affects, is the belief by leftists that the ends justify the means. As such, many injustices can be justified and covered up.

You, I, and others discussed the "American Left" in another thread last year. The term "left" is often applied to anyone voting Democrat, although many of those folks don't even understand the term, nor are they all statists, Marxists, Socialists, or stupid. Some of the comments in this thread are regurgitations of topics discussed in 2012. As for this thread on "Public Schools", Cruella's original post was pretty much right-on target. Many of today's parents, and many of today's public schools are pathetic excuses when it comes to raising and teaching children. Arguing that public schools attempt to teach "critical thinking" is absurd on its face. Public schools today are indoctrination mills, not objective institutions of learning.

the demise of journalism is certainly a problem that drives apathy. if you know "the news" is not true what point is there in caring ?

that being said journalism was always biased but you could count on scandal to bring out the scoopmeisters.

pols have neen in it for themselves forever with a few notable exceptions. but with no press they can afford to be that much more brazen.

but at some point people get fed up and alter the status quo. a little and for a little while.

we'll see what happens in this regard.
