It would be difficult as that would call into question a very serious debate within the republican party as to why they placated trump and pandered to his ego. They legitamised him as he muscled his way into the upper echelons of the party with money and his badgering style.
Not to mention that Trump still has a hard core of supporters who would turn against anyone who turned against Trump. Of course, most of those supporters are Republican voters who wouldn't vote for a Democrat if the other choice were Voldemort.
