I am not sure your comparison is fair or accurate. The BTK killer was the only one who did the horrible things he did and no political motivations of anyone else in the country were involved. There are thousands of modern democrats who see themselves as final authorities ruling over what sorts of monuments tens of millions of Americans will or will not be allowed to erect and celebrate.

I remember when Bill Clinton sent US troops into Somalia and refused to support them, resulting in the infamous 'Black Hawk Down' fiasco where several US soldiers, including my former neighbor at the time, died fighting for their lives. Other American heroes who died fighting for their lives were those supporting the US diplomatic mission in Benghazi where Hillary called off rescuers and watched from the comfort of her American home as our heroes died in a bloody 8-hour battle with terrorists Obama had said were no longer a threat. I also remember when Biden retreated from Afghanistan and abandoned thousands of Americans and American assets to certain torture and death at the hands of bloody Afghan gangsters.
