There is no real price competition for prescription drugs. The doctor prescribes these, usually not knowing the price, and the pharmacy sets the price. Some pharmacies in Miami refuse to quote prices over the phone. "You have to bring it is" they say.
The free market does not work with prescription drugs as they are sold in the US. Rx drug prices are MUCH higher in the US than in Mexico, Canada and the EU countries.
When I bought a prescription drug in Spain, it was labeled "precio máximo al público" and that was what I was charged. It was less than a third of what I paid in the US. It was for a heart medication whose patent had run out years ago. In the US, the price was raised every year. In Mexico, Argentina and France it is not a prescription drug, and is sold for much less.
There is no reason to pay extra for research and development of a drug with an expired patent. They cannot develop it or research it any more. What we are paying for in the US is EXCESSIVE PROFITS and ADVERTISING, neither of which serve to cure any disease or treat any symptom.
