"Living off the land" is more of a romantic dream than it is a reality. Just where would a person do that? There are three kinds of land in the U.S. Federal land, State land and private land. Unless you own large amount of wilderness land, the hunting-gathering would likely cause the hunter-gatherer would-be to be arrested for hunting out of season, destroying protected flora, illegal camping(usually have to pay to camp, or are time limits), et. AL. Even in the event of owning your own land, hunting-gathering is a subsistence activity not likely to generate the money to pay your property taxes resulting in the loss of the land.I am a transsexual, my spouse and I are both educated and we often speak on panels for Human Sexuality and Gender Ed classes. We also present for continuing ed classes for counselors.
However attractive the hunter/gatherer lifestyle may be, it will take a vast amount of dying before we are reduced enough in numbers to live like that. The transition too will be very difficult for anyone trying to go from living in today's world who tries to go back to living off the land. We don't have the necessary information base and skill set for that kind of life.
You can however, live in a cardboard box on a steam grate in any large city with the government turning a blind eye...such is America.
