Why are there so few non-believers

There are plenty of non-believers in America. It's not as popular in America as in other places because America has placed freedom of religion as a central tenet of the value system. While the deist founding fathers figured that it would mean that Americans won't take religion seriously, what happened was an existentialist approach to religion. And if you can choose your religion, you tend to take it more seriously.

And religious fanatics get a bad rap, but they did end American slavery.

Now, this is a tough topic for many people and I could sit here and write for hours. I won't do that though. I would also like to know why there are so few non-believers. Is it because that so many people want to think that there is something else out there they can turn to when things go bad. I don't believe in something that I haven't seen. I don't want false hope and if I don't leave with the "rapture" then I don't leave.

Have you seen air ?
Have you seen a neutron?
Have you seen the earth's core?
Sure there are indications of all these sorts of things but there is an element of faith involved.
There are those of us who have seen indications of God.

What did Voltaire mean when he said "If there were no God, it would have been necessary to invent him"? The basis for his question lies in the word "If", and thus Voltaire was suggesting there is a God. As to Dogs questions, the answer is yes. We have seen the effects of what air can do in the wind, and in the concept that we need it to live. Due to the advances of science we have seen a neutron, and the core of the earth.

The "indications of God" are harder to demonstrate. One can claim that a changed life was due to God acting on that person, or that a healing was caused by God. On the other hand, one can also claim that these occurred due to the strength of mans character.

Bottom line is one chooses to believe, or not to believe. Neither proves, or disproves, the existence of God. One could argue that as society drifts further away from a belief in God, and acting as He declares to be moral, the deeper society drifts into a constant state of perversion in all forms. Thus, as Voltaire declares, it is again becoming " necessary to invent him".

I think that being agnostic is just more of the thing today than being a non believer. I am not really sure what sparked this or the reasoning behind it, but that just seems to be where most of the younger people stand. I guess it makes sense, and it just leaves more room for the possibility of faith, which might not be a bad thing.

Agnosticism is the preferred choice simply because the young want to have it both ways.

What Voltaire meant was that he, like so many, cannot accept the concept that there could be something greater than himself.
Who saw the earth's core ?

What theory are you speaking of?

Then again, your comment was based on a false premise "It's easier to be a deist than to believe in an actual god that created you."

Why is faith in the one "easier" then faith in the other?
Because deists don't believe in a god. They see God as an equal if anything. Mainly it's a means to avoid it.

Oh, all the theory that says waves will behave this way or that. Read your article and everything mentioned is theory based.

You are confusing Humanism with Deism. As usual you just spout off nonsense to hear your fingers tingling:

deism

noun
1. belief in the existence of a God on the evidence of reason and nature only, with rejection of supernatural revelation (distinguished from theism).
2. belief in a God who created the world but has since remained indifferent to it.

Like this:

"Instead of using CAT-scans and X-rays to see the center of the Earth, researchers use waves emitted by earthquakes to get a sense of the planet's innards. Just like an X-ray, seismic waves bounce around, changing direction and speed based on the material they pass through. If researchers can gauge how quickly a wave moves from one tracking station to another, they can get a pretty good sense of what the ground that wave is traveling through looks like.

These tests are what allowed scientists to see that the core of the Earth is broken into three layers all with slightly different structures. The core's heat is mostly due to the slow decay of radioactive elements left over from when the planet first formed. The molten iron outer core lies about 3000 kilometers below our feet, while the solid iron inner core is another 2000 kilometers further down. A few other elements, including oxygen and silicon, are thrown in for good measure. But for the most part, iron rules the Earth's underbelly."

The movement of seismic waves through material is not a "theory", it is a proven fact.
