Marijuana multistate operator Planet 13 Holdings will have a grand opening in a week for its 3,000-square-foot consumption, food and entertainment space dubbed Dazed! Consumption Lounge.

The venue, which features bong-shaped chandeliers, VIP booths with flat-screen TVs and a speak-easy secret entrance, is located within Planet 13’s 112,000-square-foot store adjacent to the Las Vegas Strip."

Republican Senators Say Cannabis Rescheduling Violates International Treaties

"Senator Mitt Romney of Utah and two of his Republican colleagues have sent a letter to the Drug Enforcement Administration, urging the law enforcement agency to decline a bid to reschedule marijuana under federal drug laws. Cannabis is currently listed under Schedule I of the federal Controlled Substances Act (CSA), a designation reserved for drugs with no accepted medical value and a high potential for abuse.

“Any effort to reschedule marijuana must be based on proven facts and scientific evidence — not the favored policy of a particular administration — and account for our treaty obligations,” the senators wrote in their letter.

The senators noted in their letter that cannabis is controlled by international treaty, “which is not surprising given its known dangers and health risks — and the United Nations International Narcotics Control Board (INCB) has fiercely criticized efforts to legalize marijuana in other countries as a violation of the treaty.”

Researchers affiliated with the University of California at Davis affirmed that there is “no direct relationship between impairment and THC concentrations” in subjects’ bodily fluids – a finding that is consistent with the opinions of numerous traffic safety groups, including the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the American Automobile Association."

"Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin approved legislation (SB 391 | HB 149) expanding the state’s employment protections for medical cannabis patients to include public employees. The new law takes effect July 1, 2024.

Current law prohibits private employers from discharging, disciplining, or discriminating against an employee for their lawful use of medical cannabis pursuant to a valid written certification, but the definition of “employer” excludes the state and localities.

Governor Youngkin vetoed legislation (SB 115) which sought to protect the parental rights of lawful cannabis consumers by amending the state’s child neglect statute so that the use of cannabis by a parent or a child’s guardian is no longer considered to be prima facie evidence of a crime."

"Over 38,000 commercially licensed truck drivers failed federally mandated drug screens for marijuana in 2023 and many are not reapplying for work within the industry, according to data provided by the US Department of Transportation.

Additionally, nearly 13,000 drivers in 2023 failed to show up for their required drug tests – the highest number of refusals ever reported by the agency.

Federal law mandates commercially licensed drivers to undergo random marijuana urinalysis testing, which detects the presence of the inert carboxy-THC metabolite. This non-psychoactive metabolite is detectable in subjects’ urine for weeks or even months following past exposure. According to a report from the US Department of Justice, the detection of this metabolite “only indicates that a particular substance is present in the test subject’s body tissue. It does not indicate abuse or addiction; recency, frequency, or amount of use; or impairment.”
