If you go to the original article, they give statistics and their source for data. The next step in a controversy is non-affiliated research to attempt to reproduce their results, a procedure that took place when room temperature superconductivity, or room temperature nuclear fusion was reported, hyped, and shown to be false. If the results are verified, only then should the older science be reconsidered.

The title of the OP, "Science is often wrong" is certainly true for the deep history, which includes flat earth, phlogiston, etc. However your reference title, "Scientists are wrong about the universe" illustrates that magazine articles often go way overboard in hyperbole especially in the title, to get readers to go to their site and read the article and surrounding advertisements.
