I know that real life policing is not like they portray it on the screen, but we always knew that shooting once or twice or several times in the air always stopped unarmed fighting.

Except, what if you want to experience what it feels like to shoot and kill a person?

Shooting in the air is most likely going to stop the unarmed fighting, and once that fighting has been quelled, it's most likely going to remove any chance at a freebie.

But if you shoot the person while the unarmed fighting is at its greatest intensity, you can not only get the freebie, but also count on that shot helping bring about a cessation of violence.

And that would help make the case that shooting the person was somehow part of his official police action to restore peace to the event.
