"Hungary’s parliament passed legislation on Tuesday setting up foundations to take over the running of universities and cultural institutions in a move critics say extends the ideological imprint of the ruling right-wing government.

Currently, most Hungarian universities are owned by the state but have a large amount of academic autonomy.

The bill, drafted by Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s deputy, says the universities need to be reorganized and run by foundations because modern conditions require a “re-thinking of the role of the state” and the foundations will manage institutions more efficiently.

Orban’s Fidesz party, which has a two-thirds majority in parliament, voted for the legislation on Tuesday.

The United States has removed sanctions on a close aide of the Hungarian prime minister, Viktor Orbán, the state department said, adding that the punitive measures had been “inconsistent with US foreign policy interests”.

Joe Biden’s administration imposed sanctions on Rogán on 7 January over alleged corruption, in a move that Budapest pledged to challenge once Trump returned to the White House on 20 January.

Rogán is a close aide of Orbán and has run his cabinet office since 2015.

“Throughout his tenure as a government official, Rogán has orchestrated Hungary’s system for distributing public contracts and resources to cronies loyal to himself and the Fidesz political party,” the US treasury department said at the time.

Accusations of corruption and cronyism have dogged Orbán since he came to power in 2010, while Budapest’s relations with Washington became increasingly strained during Biden’s presidency, due in part to Budapest’s warm ties with Moscow despite the war in Ukraine.

After all, Trump’s definition of a “criminal” deportable to such a place includes 179 men who may not have committed crimes at all.

According to the government’s latest arguments, the detainees sent to El Salvador exist in a legal black hole — unreachable by the courts, by Congress, even by Trump himself. That they were denied their due process rights is now a matter of Supreme Court record. That the White House doesn’t care is also a matter of public record. Soon we will see this same grim dance play out again. Next time it will likely be American citizens who are forcibly disappeared.


A word exists for a prison that “functions outside a judicial system” and where “prisoners are not indicted or convicted of any crime by judicial process.” According to the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, the word for that kind of place is a concentration camp. On Monday, Trump pledged to dedicate taxpayer funds to the construction of even more Salvadoran concentration camps, with Bukele’s enthusiastic blessing.

"..President Donald Trump signed an executive order Thursday directing the Corporation for Public Broadcasting to end federal funding for America’s two biggest public broadcasters, which have faced a series of attacks from the White House and Republican lawmakers accusing them of biased reporting.

The order instructs the CPB’s board to terminate direct funding for National Public Radio and the Public Broadcasting Service to the “maximum extent allowed by law and shall decline to provide future funding.” It also orders the board to take steps to “minimize or eliminate” indirect funding to NPR and PBS.

The corporation, however, is a private entity that is supposed to be protected from government interference, including executive orders from the president. The corporation is currently suing Trump because the White House tried to terminate three of its board members earlier this week.

“CPB is not a federal executive agency subject to the President’s authority,” the corporation’s CEO, Patricia Harrison, said in a statement. “Congress directly authorized and funded CPB to be a private nonprofit corporation wholly independent of the federal government.”

“The President’s blatantly unlawful Executive Order, issued in the middle of the night, threatens our ability to serve the American public with educational programming, as we have for the past 50-plus years,” PBS CEO Paula Kerger said in a statement Friday morning. “We are currently exploring all options to allow PBS to continue to serve our member stations and all Americans.”

NPR joined PBS in suggesting it will consider legal action against the administration. “We will vigorously defend our right to provide essential news, information and life-saving services to the American public. We will challenge this Executive Order using all means available,” the public broadcasting organization said in a statement.

In addition to his ongoing lawsuit against CBS, the president has sued several other news outlets as part of a campaign to attack major media organizations. Trump sued The Des Moines Registerand top pollster J. Ann Selzer last December over a pre-election survey that showed Harris leading Trump in Iowa, a state he ultimately won by double digits. Trump claimed the inaccurate poll violated consumer fraud protections; the Register is currently fighting the lawsuit in court.


He also sued ABC News last year, alleging that star anchor George Stephanopoulos defamed him by repeatedly stating a jury found Trump had “raped” E. Jean Carroll after a jury found him civilly liable for “sexual abuse.” The network ultimately settled that lawsuit, paying $15 million to Trump’s “presidential foundation and museum.”

When Miller speaks of the “president’s inherent authorities and powers,” he is explicitly invoking the “unitary executive theory”—a dictatorial interpretation of the Constitution that asserts that the president alone exercises full control over the executive branch and possesses sweeping authority over both foreign and domestic policy, including immigration and law enforcement.

Miller, both during his time in the White House and as the founder of America First Legal in 2021, has advanced policies and filed lawsuits aimed at legitimizing Trump’s dictatorial attacks on federal agencies and established law.

He noted that in order to carry out mass deportations, the administration would have to enroll “state and local law enforcement nationwide in assisting in supporting the deportation effort,” as well as the National Guard.

“We’re going to get National Guard more engaged in putting them into immigration enforcement roles in a domestic law enforcement setting,” Miller said, adding, “which is allowable under the 287(g) program that’s used for state on local law enforcement as well.”
