This excerpt is from a Reuters photographer who took the above pictures. The area was covered with tear gas and one flash bang illuminated it. It makes an impressive picture from such a localized flash. That occurred very late in the game. There was a lot of tear gas already in the area as seen in the adjacent photos.

Four chaotic hours later, she captured the exact moment a flash-bang grenade, fired by law enforcement to disperse protesters, illuminated the Capitol steps, throwing tear-gas smoke into sharp relief and casting a shadow of the American flag onto the iconic dome.
