By a margin of 52% to 40%, voters believe that “cheating affected the outcome of the 2020 U.S. presidential election.” That’s per a Rasmussen Reports survey from this month. This stands in stark contrast to the countless news stories editorializing about “no evidence of voter fraud” and “the myth of voter fraud.”

It isn’t just Republicans who believe this cheating occurred. Even 34% of Democrats believe it, as do 38% of those who “somewhat” support President Biden. A broad range of Americans think this: men, women, all age groups, whites, those who are neither white nor black, Republicans, those who are neither Republicans nor Democrats, all job categories, all income groups except those making over $200,000 per year, and all education groups except those who attended graduate school.

And with good reason. New research of mine is forthcoming in the peer-reviewed economics journal Public Choice, and it finds evidence of around 255,000 excess votes (possibly as many as 368,000) for Joe Biden in six swing states where Donald Trump lodged accusations of fraud. Biden only carried these states – Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin – by a total of 313,253 votes. Excluding Michigan, the gap was 159,065

After election officials identified “glitches” that switched 6,000 Trump votes to Biden, the courts in Antrim County Michigan ordered an audit of Dominion voting machines. The forensic audit was carried out by the Allied Security Operations Group (ASOG). This group conducted a forensic duplication on the county’s election management server. They investigated compact flash cards used by local precincts in their Dominion ImageCast system, and they audited the memory sticks used by Dominion Voter Assist Terminals and the memory sticks used for the poll book.

This forensic audit found blatant evidence of a coordinated attack on the 2020 Presidential election. The Federal Election Commission allows an error rate of .0008 percent for all voting machines used in US elections. The Dominion machines in Antrim county had an error rate of 68.05 percent! Even more shocking: The ballot-adjudication logs and the security logs for the November 3 general election were removed. All log files for previous elections were still contained on the machines, but someone on the inside was able to erase the all-important log files for the 2020 election.

Lott (2022) introduces ‘simple tests’ of voter fraud and applies them to measure the extent of fraud in the 2020 election. Using the tests, Lott (2022) claims to have discovered 10,000 extra votes for Biden in Pennsylvania and Georgia based on mishandling of absentee votes, 6,700 extra votes for Biden in Pennsylvania from inappropriate allowances for provisional votes, and 255,000 excess votes due to artificially large turnout across several counties in six key states. All three claims are demonstrably false: the first claim relies on a specification error that Lott (2022) inadvertently reintroduced into the analysis after we identified and corrected the same error in the first public draft of this paper; the second claim is based on analysis that, by its own logic, would show larger fraud in favor of Trump; the third depends on selective reporting, as Lott (2022) shows insignificant results when differential trends in turnout across states are acknowledged. As we document in the Appendix, Lott’s (2022) analysis is riddled with errors and fails to accurately report the research that was conducted. At several points
the paper misstates the regression specification being used (as we confirm through replicating Lott’s (2022) results), misreports regression coefficients (always in a direction favorable to his argument), and incorrectly reports variables used to produce a result. After correcting these errors, we show Lott’s (2022) analysis fails to provide any evidence of voter fraud in the 2020 election.

It’s not a surprise that Lott’s 2022 article has such huge problems, given his track record, both with this particular claim and his work more generally (for example here). And that’s not even getting into his record of lying on social media.

Not only is it true that the machines can be hacked or manipulated, it is also true that there is strong statistical evidence that they were hacked or manipulated. And the statistical analysis is the type that is used to identify fraud all the time and can be used in court as evidence.

In 2012, the National Academy of Science published a well-researched report that stated without hesitation that statistical modeling could identify election fraud. In fact, that historically has been considered an almost universal truth. Prior to 2020, the only ones who seemed to disagree were those who were considered cheaters themselves.

Before the 2020 election Democrats were constantly warning the public of the dangers of election fraud by voting machines. Now Democrats claim election fraud by voting machines did not possibly happen even though hardly any thorough investigations and examinations of the machines were ever conducted.

There is a very long list of people who were quite clear in their concern that voting machines could be rigged or hacked (at least before this election). These include the HBO documentary Killchain, PBS, NPR, the New York Times, the Denver Post, multiple other experts, and prestigious academicians. And of course, there were questions by liberal Democrats including Elizabeth Warren. But now, if you dare question the machines, you may be committing high treason. Unless, of course, you question how a Republican like Mitch McConnell won and then it’s ok. [Maybe that is why McConnell doesn’t want Trump to look into election fraud????]
