Gallup poll: Ronald Reagan greatest President

It is only the "examiner" website that is blocked like that, it it came about because of that one guy who kept coming back to spam his own articles from that site on this site.

As an aside, the examiner will just "hire" anyone to write for them and basically functions as nothing more than a personal blog (especially in the realm of politics). Taking it as "news" is highly suspect.

That's sort of like curing a headache by cutting off the head IMHO. Why not just take care of the spammer individually?

Surely the "greatness" of a Presidency needs to be measured with more than "he set a good example"?

You don't think the nation was worse off in the midst of the Civil War perhaps?

yes and no...Washington was dealing with the very idea of our nation and what we wanted it to be that holds today...the civil war, dealt with really what states would be part of it. Had the war been lost...the north would still be the US and have the same ideals...and who knows in my view even been better off...but its defiantly between those 2 as most threatening time to our nation.

Ok...I don't dispute that Washington was a great person... my question is what made him a great President?

So far the responses have been along the lines of he was a great man and he didn't become King...

All of that is fine and good, but it is really not a measure of his Presidency. A President's "greatness" is surely not measured by simply his perceived integrity?

OK hows about holding the tiller whikle the government was being created and obtainig money to allow that to happen (no small feat and which was only possily due to the people's faith in him). Can you think of anyone else up for that executive level task ? Anyone at all ?

You don't think the nation was worse off in the midst of the Civil War perhaps?

Well there was never a reason for the Civil War in the first place so if you are suggesting that causing something that killed 500+k people and 40% of the economy was ok, are you on crack ? a rhetorical question only.

but Washington did far more to hoild the union together than Lincoln ecver did considering he rent it asunder.

Rick, if you have any concrete examples to add, then by all means add them.

Rick isn't very good at examples, or data.

He/she is a quantum mechanic which is the scientific application of the orwellian concept of doublethink i.e. the ability to hold two conflicting ideas at the same time.

This also explains his inability to hold a logical argument for any length of time - sooner or later, uncertainty creeps in...

Presidents Day 2011: Greatest Presidents of All-Time - Gallup Poll

February 18th, 2011 11:34 pm ET

According to this year's Presidents Day Gallup Poll, President Ronald Reagan is the Greatest President of All-Time. In the past 12 years, Reagan, President Abraham Lincoln, and President John F. Kennedy have consistently shared time at the top of the list.

Presidents Day, the third Monday in February, is often thought to celebrate President George Washington's birthday as he was the first President of the United States, and his actual birthday is on February 22nd. However, the latest version of the celebrated holiday is for all Presidents. Washington, incidentally, came in at number five this year.

The Greatest Presidents (as of February 2011) are:

Ronald Reagan (19% of the total vote)

Abraham Lincoln (14% of the total vote)

Bill Clinton (13% of the total vote)

John F. Kennedy (11% of the total vote)

George Washington (10% of the total vote)

That poll was based on people who know nothing about politics nor about history..
