Pope Benedict xvi has resigned. This indicates the great strain that this job has in the modern world. Today Popes are expected to travel the world, to always be on TV and to be active. This is hard for a 85 year old man.

Even although Pope Benedict has been label as conservative he has continued the reforms of his predecessors Pope John 23rd ans Pope John Paul 2.

It is hope the New Pope will continued to lead the church wisely.

Liked Ben as popes go. good for stepping aside when he was not up to the demands as opposed totaking up space till you die.
take the rest of your life off and thanks for all the good you have done serving almighty God all there years.

I got a letter from Dr Mustafa Ceric Former Grand Mufti of Bosnia.
He said, "The news about H>H> Pope Benedict XV!"s resignation at the end of the month after nearly eight years as the successor of St Peter and head of the Catholic Church was highly noticed by all Muslims who had dialogue with him. First as Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger and then Pope Benedict XVI from 2005 to 2013 after Jon Paul 11'sdeath he will be remembered as a foremost Catholic theologian and a sincere pastor for the Catholic faithful.
Although initially hurt by his remarks about Islam on September 12, 2006, while lecturing on "Faith, Reason and the University"at the University of Regensburg, Germany, Muslim Scholars appreciated his apology afterwards and he subsequent friendly visits to Islamic countries and mosques...

It good to sincere similar tributes from other religions

Steveox, To Catholics the Pope has a great influence on our lives> I could not eat eat meat yesterday because it was Ash Wednesday!. Pope have great influence on the world as well. Pope Paul 11 is given credit for freeing Poland from Communism even helping bring down the Berlin Wall.
I think because of the difficulties of the job today in the modern world with so much traveling and appearance in the media a religious leader must be young and fit. I think most Protestant leaders retire before they die. There is always the danger of mental problems as we have.
    seen with some leaders.

Now that Benedict has broken a 600 year precedent I think we will see younger leaders who can resign when they get too old. My favourite candidate Is Cardinal Lula Tagle of the Philippines He is only 55, Charismatic and focusing on helping the poor and needy. Does anyone else favour another cardinal?

WRONG!!! It Was Ronald Reagan who got tough with the Soviets because America built up its military 3 Times more than Jimmy Carter did. Reagan built America strong again and the Russians saw it. It Was Gorby who told the kremlin better make peace with America cause Reagan is not a pushover Reagan is a tough guy to handle. Reagan was like a tough John Wayne cowboy. How many times you saw the Outlaws shit in their pants when they saw John Wayne? Gorby was scared of Reagan. Pope John Paul had an ally it was Reagan. It like this..How many times you like pick on little kids when you were boys? Yeah its so fun pushing little boys but when their Big Brothers show up with them then its not so fun anymore. The Pope had a big bully behind him and he was Ronald Reagan. Even Moammar Gadhafi was scared of Reagan. Even China was scared of him

I will not Discuss an American President here. Historians have given credit to Pope Jon Paul 2 for the overthrow of Communism in Europe. Lenczowski, John said so in "Public Diplomacy and the Lessons of Soviet Collapse"2002.
It is intresting the Communism first collapse in Poland, Poe John Paul 2 country. \ In Asia and South American Communism or at least Socialism has grown so American Presidents were not successful in their own neighbourhood\

I was going to put it up for you but couldn't find it.
Try this... start playing your youtube, copy the URL while it's playing then paste it right into a post as is and that should do it.

Trolls do not attempt to prove their points, only bloviate over whatever silliness they have a bee in their bonnet about. Do you have an example of D applying his brain ? I'd be curious to see that.

The pope does wear a dress

    He is ex hitler youth

The roman catholic church supported the nazis

Catholics believe bread and wine can magically turn into the flesh and blood of a long dead man and that it is appropriate to eat it

The catholic church preaches poverty but is super wealthy

The catholic church is a haven for paedofiles

The catholic church has killed and tortured hundreds of thousands of people

The catholic church causes misery on an industrial scale in Africa by preaching that condoms are evil

    So my post above stands

It is a fascist organisation worshipped by morons

You would have to be a moron to overlook the mass of evidence which proves the vileness of the RC church

But like all good gangsters it does some good works in the community

Well that does not overturn the misery and hypocrisy it is steeped in

DawkinsRocks, You make many unsupported points. The Pope on formal ocasions where a gown which you could describe as adress, The historical reasons for this are well known. Most of the time he does not.
The Pope Benedict XVI like all German youth was forced to be a member of Hitler Youth. There is no evidence he wa supported Hitler in adult life.
The Catholic Church has a whole had no record of supporting the Nazies. Many leaders condemned the Nazies a few might have given diplomatic recognition but this was because he Vatican is a state that was netual during he war.

The wealth of the Catholic Church is in buildings, paintings, suptures etc it has little real wealth
The Catholic Church is no more a haven for padefiles than other organizations dealing with children. It is still wrong and condemned by leaders.

The Catholic church like all historical bodied has been responsible for some killing but it is rather small and in the past.policy .

The Catholic Church policy on condoms is changing . Sometimes they can be used as the lesser evil to prevent aids.
