So how would you classify Obamacare?
Inasmuch as the insurance is private, it is not a socialist solution to the problem of insuring the uninsured.

Socialized medicine, real socialized medicine, is what they have in Spain, where the doctors are actually government employees. Under Obamacare, the providers are still privately owned.

You said it best with your Reagan qoute the other day.

A Communist is someone who reads Marx and Lenin. An anti-communist is someone who understands Marx and Lenin.

-Ronald Reagan

For whatever the reason some are simply incapable of understanding Marxism.

Agreed. Some label anything that the government does and that they object to as "Marxism."

"To avoid being mistaken for a sellout, I chose my friends carefully. The more politically active black students. The foreign students. The Chicanos. The Marxist professors and structured feminists.....Barrack Obama - Dreams of My Father

Do we go forward towards a new vision of an America in which prosperity is shared? Or do we go backward to the same policies that got us in this mess in the first place?” Barack Obama

"So it’s not surprising then that they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren’t like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations." Barack Obama

Actually, that famous spreading the wealth comment was about the graduated income tax.

So, if that's Marxist, then so has been every president since at least FDR.

And t he "guns or religion" comment was about people who can't get along with others who are different from themselves.

No, Obama is not a "Marxist", nor is he a Muslim terrorist, nor a Kenyan, nor the AntiChrist, nor any of the more absurd things he has been called. He is a liberal Democrat, pure and simple, much as his predecessor was a liberal Republican. Not much difference between the two of them.

Obama is a Marxist, socialist, progressive....take your pick. They all mean the same thing to me.

Obama received 93% of the black vote ....

What are the real unemployment numbers for blacks? What opportunities do blacks have under Obama?

Yet, if an election was held today they would still vote for him.

Politics, like religion, is one subject that you cannot convince some folks of the very obvious that is right there in front of them. Some will never be able to see nor ever admit the reality of this current administration ... regardless of the evidence before them!

Whatever the underlying cause of the market boom -- it's been a nice couple of years haha.
For the moment its all on paper. You have to actually exit the market before it drops before you can say you won. Then subtract the capital gains tax and the loss due to inflation. Many will win...

Nope.

I'm saying that a socialist wouldn't support polices that result in a booming Wall Street. A socialist would be more into letting the corporate world go belly up and then trying to take it over.

A socialist would be more into helping the average Joe make ends meet, and not into pumping money into the capitalist system.

and no, I'm not saying that socialism is the solution to our economic problems, just that the current administration is not demonstrating itself to be socialistic. Statist, yes. Liberal, yes. Socialist, no.

I doubt socialist are any more interested in actually helping Joe than in helping themselves - just like all power elite.

Here is a quote from wiki on the russian banking system:

"In Vladimir Lenin's view, banks were an important framework for the building of a socialist society. He believed the ready-made big banks of capitalism could be converted into an effective apparatus for state control of the economy."

Granted it did not work out the way Lenin wanted because the banks collapsed completely then later became more like this:

"In Soviet times the role of the banks was practically speaking limited to financing central government’s economic plans; sectoral banks and savings banks existed but did not function in market-led conditions. So sectoral banks would, for example, provide financial assistance to Soviet enterprises with cash flow problems. However, the provision of credit often depended less on the creditworthiness of the borrower than on its priority for the planning policy makers and government departments.[1]"

Another example might be communist china: do they have a bank and stock market system? You bet the do. (Sorry about the typeface)

You may just be technically right but wrong in every practical way.

I guess if this path continues in 20 years when most of the means of production are owned by the gov and most of our lives are controlled from the top down we will know. Lets hope this path does not continue.

There will be those who will blindly walk that path to the very end .... always denying the obvious in front of their own eyes!

In many states, the recovery is making the income gap worse

The income gap in America has been widening for decades and the modest three-year recovery did little to change that, according to new Census data.

The new data suggest that despite modest recoveries in many states, the middle class has been shrinking while households have been added in the lowest and highest income brackets. The state-by-state data compare incomes from a pair of three-year periods: 2007 through 2009, a span that included the Great Recession, and 2010 through 2012, a period that included the ongoing and modest recovery.

Obamacare is only going to make that income gap worse. Those in the middleclass will be hit the hardest with double and triple insurance costs, plus the huge out of pocket expenses that goes along with it.

I have no clue how the DOW went over 16000 today, and the S&P over 1800. The first payments of Obamacare have to be made by Dec. 15th, in order for their insurance to be effective on Jan. 1st. Do they not realize what a bite this is going to take out of the economy? Especially during the holiday shopping season when retail usually realizes it's profits.

You are right to see the disconnect between the rising stock market and the economy in general. They went up for the simple reason that the fed has created a bubble. The phase we are in is called the Euphoria stage. People are very excited to be making lots of money. Soon the smart money will start to the stage called profit taking while others will deny there is any problem until they have lost. I don't know how long soon will be. It could be a few months or a few years. Looking at old graphs of popping bubbles I see that when they "pop" it actually takes a few months to go from the top to the bottom rather than the few days I was expecting based on the terms used. I suspect that because it takes a few months everyone tells themselves that when it starts they will just get out. But looking backward on a graph is entirely different than looking forward on half a graph. One never knows if the drop is temporary and will go back up again.

I have a very small amount invested in a 401K that I really cant get out of anyway so I am going to let that ride. I think silver is good but certainly time will tell. Maybe the fed will work some magic, maybe a new president will work some magic - I am skeptical.
