Marijuana U.S.A.

"Among these is Senate Bill 696, which provides a pathway for those currently incarcerated for marijuana-related felony offenses to have their sentences modified. There are approximately 400 people imprisoned, in Virginia, for marijuana violations, according to Department of Corrections data from 2022.

House and Senate lawmakers also approved bills (SB 115 | HB 833) amending the state’s child neglect statute so that the use of
cannabis by a parent or a child’s guardian is no longer considered to be prima facie evidence of a crime.

The bills state that “a child shall not be considered an abused or neglected child” solely because the person responsible for their care lawfully consumes cannabis. It also provides that
no parent or guardian should be denied child custody or visitation rights based solely upon their cannabis use."

"On Friday, NORML was invited to the White House.

Vice President Kamala Harris convened a discussion centered around marijuana justice that included top Biden Administration staffers and longtime NORML activist Chris Goldstein.

Chris was federally sentenced for possessing a small amount of cannabis in 2014, and he received a presidential pardon certificate in January 2024 through the new DOJ portal. During Friday’s meeting, he spoke on behalf of tens of millions of Americans who have been arrested or harassed on the premise of a few grams of cannabis."

"The labels on CBD vape pens typically provide imprecise information regarding the products’ contents, according to data published in the Journal of Forensic Sciences.

A team of scientists from Marshall University in West Virginia quantified cannabinoid components in nine retail brands of CBD vape liquids. Hemp-derived CBD products are often available
over the counter at gas stations and other retailers. However, they are not federally regulated and they are typically subject to few, if any, state regulations.

Of the nine products analyzed, six possessed levels of CBD that were “statistically
different from the amount reported on the label” – a finding consistent with many other studies."

"Patients authorized to consume medical cannabis products report significant improvements in their overall health, according to data published in the journal Medical Cannabis and Cannabinoids.

Researchers affiliated with the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine assessed the impact of medical cannabis on patients’ physical and emotional well-being. Participants in the study possessed a doctor’s authorization to access state-licensed cannabis products in Pennsylvania. Patients’ symptoms were assessed upon enrollment in the study and then again at 30, 60, and 90 days. Most patients enrolled in the study inhaled herbal cannabis or concentrates."

"Eighty-eight percent of Americans say that marijuana ought to be legal for either medical or adult use, according to nationwide polling compiled by the Pew Research Center.

The
results are consistent with those of prior Pew polls finding that only about ten percent of U.S. adults support a blanket policy of cannabis criminalization."

Governor Youngkin has just shown Virginians exactly how out of touch he is with the widely-accepted science and policy research on cannabis in the US. Virginians deserve better than this head-in-the-sand approach to lawmaking from their elected officials. The only protection Youngkins veto provides is to the illicit market that has ballooned during his time in office.”

"State lawmakers have advanced legislation (HB 285) to the Governor’s desk expanding medical cannabis access to seniors and others.

The legislation provides
discretion to physicians to issue medical cannabis recommendations to any patient who may benefit from it, regardless of whether or not they suffer from a state-specific qualifying condition. It also allows those ages 65 or older to self-certify for a registration card absent a doctor’s recommendation."
