It is argued that although the Democratic Party was a largely racist party in the south back in the before the 60's that they actually had a lot of political figures of that party switch over to the Republican party after that time period. Some liberals argue that it is now by that reason that Republicans are actually the "racist" party. It seems though that while Democrats in the 50's and 60's used Jim Crow and laws to keep people segregated, that they are now doing the same. They are pushing agendas that further divide people of different races.

Lincoln, the first republican, opened that door for the dems to leverage the mother of all wedge issues to their advantage. And boy have they !

The Big Racist Lie is that Republican policies hurt blacks, and hence Republicans are racists, while Democrat policies help blacks. The reality is just the opposite.

Modern Democrat policies hurt blacks just as historical Democrat policies -- such as fighting the Civil War to defend slavery, founding the KKK, and passing all the segregation laws -- hurt Blacks. On the other hand, modern Republican policies help blacks just as historical Republican policies -- such as ending slavery, passing the 14th Amendment, and integrating the military and public schools -- helped Blacks.

I never really got to know how it was the Dems who were racist and then suddenly it's the Republicans who are the racists. Apparently though Dem's racism didn't disappear. They just got better at covering up what they do . . .
