The gap between the rich and the poor isn’t just widening in the United States - it has hit its highest level in more than 30 years in the world’s wealthiest countries.
According to an Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development
report released Monday, income inequality is on the rise in the United States and most other developed countries. The average income of the richest 10 percent across developed countries is about nine times more than that of the poorest 10 percent of the population in those countries, the report found.
The U.S. — where the Occupy Wall Street movement exploded to protest the disparity between the richest 1 percent and the remaining 99 percent — ranks in with the fourth-highest inequality level, coming after Chile, Mexico and Turkey. Overall, the
report stated, inequality among U.S. workers has risen by 25 percent since 1980.
