Very true. He implemented change because he knew the Soviet Union was headed towards bankruptcy due to a failed system. He knew communism was a failure. There are those who claim he PURPOSEFULLY destroyed the Soviet Union, to force it to free-market capitalism.
The Soviet Union did not rely on State Capitalism. The system was purely socialist. The only 'capitalist' aspect of the Soviet Union would be when it was forced to trade with nations outside the communist sphere, since Soviet 'monies' were not worth the paper they were printed upon. You, my friend, are misinformed.
They couldn't keep up with THEIR OWN NEEDS, not with NATO. Remember, the Soviet Union had more of everything than all of NATO COMBINED. That had always been their goal, since NATO was destined by the Soviet leadership for eventual destruction. If not for the USA's very accurate nukes, they would have succeeded in crushing all of NATO with conventional forces, which were far, far superior in numbers. In short, the Soviet Union was 'keeping up' with the combined economies of the entire planet, whereas the USA was simply attempting to keep up, period. Former Soviet experts claim that the Soviets spent 50% of their total GDP on their military. So, they were not 'keeping up' with the Americans. They had passed them ages ago, therefore your claim is utterly ridiculous.
Like I said.. our plan worked.. I really don't know why you have such a hate for the USA.. But if you read my post that was our intentions all along, we new communism would fail, it was just a matter of time..

Cause a friend of mine went to Moscow on a business trip. They have they same new york lifestyle you see on times square. You can go to bars have dance parties or they have clubs there. And business meetings are the same like the U.S and Japan.
