Bad things have been done in the name of Christianity and Socialism both.

Both have taken many forms.

What we need is a good definition of what both really are.

Christianity is well defined in the teachings of Christ found in the Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John).

I'm not sure Socialism is that well defined anywhere.

European Socialism is a far cry from the German National Socialist Party.

You'll find that many Conservatives in here either twist the whole "Nazi Socialism" thing or simply don't know the difference. The Nazis were a military state type of socialism. There are hippy communes that are completely socialist and I dare say they have nothing in common with the Nazis.

And Conservatives also really hate it when you make that Hitler/Christian Church connection. In fact they hate that almost as much as when you point out that many of our Founding Fathers were Deists and not Christian. Damn that book learnin' & history!!!

Oh, I'm pretty sure that examples of the lunatic fringe can be found among extreme righties and extreme lefties alike. The key is looking for those who don't want to settle differences in court, or make political decisions through the ballot box. Someone who runs into another vehicle because they don't like the bumper sticker, regardless of who that sticker supports, is certainly lunitic fringe.

We can find fringers throwing bricks through windows of senators that they dislike. We find them trying to prove that our government was behind 9/11, that the holocaust never happened, and a whole host of wacky theories.

Fox news is not lunatic fringe, far from it. You might not agree with its editorial stance, but that doesn't make it lunatic.

Calling CNN the "communist news network" comes pretty close, though.

In regards to the bold section, this is certainly true. There are extremists at all ends of the spectrum, and this is America and one is allowed to have those views. I think that is one of the things that make America great.

I dont know how it is in the twin cities, but up here there are all kinds of crazy things being said by so called "conservatives"...the ones who called Sarah out as the SOCIALIST she is. The real hardcore anti-federal zealots that Alaska has an overrepresentation of.
PFOS, you gotta understand, that in her hayday, the "conservative" Alaskans called her out for being just short of a Soviet Crack Dealer. 08/08 changed that.

I do think these particular Teabagger Righties vandalizing property, making death threats and sending unknown white powder to our elected officials definitely qualifies them as Lunatic Fringe though.

They are very similar to the nutbag that killed Dr. Tiller because they didn't agree with the law and a woman's right to choose.

Sure you have at various times had extremists (lunatic fringe if you like) on the Left as well but when you look at it that's usually over war protesting.

As far as CNN I trust it most. Sure there is a difference between commentators with political entertainment shows and the hard news segments. But there's little doubt that the overall mindset of a news corporation leaks over a bit. FOX NEWS leans Right and MSNBC NEWS leans Left. Now I like left so I like MSNBC... but I check them against CNN that in my experience is very down the middle.
