China was not involved in our war with North Korea either until combat got close enough to the Yalu river to give them an excuse. If we had invaded North Vietnam, why should we think that anything different would happen? China was clearly not interested in tolerating armed conflict close to it's borders. It is one of the things we were trying to avoid. We did not go to war with North Vietnam, if we had they could not have stood against us. What we did was try to defend South Vietnam. This kind of war strategy is ultimately impossible to prosecute successfully in the face of a determined enemy. The North Vietnamese could attack where and when they felt strongest against what they perceived to be our greatest visible weakness. They were able to keep up these attacks indefinitely because we did not move on their bases and destroy their ability to make war. Despite these huge advantages in favor of the North Vietnamese, they were still crushed each and every single time they attempted to face us openly.

The number killed in the prosecution of warfare is hardly the same as the number of innocents rounded up and slaughtered in the name of racial purity. Are you really claiming that you cannot see the difference? By the way, Stalin's purges killed tens of millions of his own citizens.
