Then there is the issue of who will feel the effect of this tax burden. Manchin’s arm by promising to fast-track the construction of natural gas pipelines in his home state of West Virginia—this after the administration spent two years opposing the construction of new oil and gas pipelines.

If policymakers are serious about deficit reduction, then they should be proposing reductions in spending, which this legislation doesn’t do. Instead, the Inflation Reduction Act imposes tax increases, market-distorting federal subsidies and price controls on an ailing American economy—all while failing to reduce surging inflation or curb our multitrillion-dollar budget deficits. Don’t fall for the headline; the Inflation Reduction Act won’t live up to its name.

The CHIPS Act has two significant downsides.

1. It weakens US support for Taiwan against its aggressor enemy, China, and

If Congress wants to ensure that the United States has a protected source of affordable, state-of-the-art chips, it should do everything it can to ensure that the already-thriving industry in Taiwan that has powered the computer revolution for decades remains safe and free. The amount of money that Congress has authorized to try to copy TSMC could go a long way toward defending Taiwan. It could, for example, buy 25 more destroyers and train our sailors better so they stop crashing the ships. Or to quote Asia expert Dan Blumenthal, instead of a CHIPS Act, Congress should have passed a SHIPS Act.

Democrats last year hailed the passage of the first gun safety legislation in decades. Now, several of them are tearing into the administration over the measure’s effect on … school archery programs.

As the law is being implemented, a rift has emerged between the Biden administration and rural-state Democrats. They’re at odds over guidance issued by the Department of Education which states that a pot of federal dollars would be prohibited from going to school archery and hunting programs.

The guidance angered Democrats from red states, where those programs are popular in schools. It also has agitated Republicans who helped negotiate the gun safety legislation. Both argue the Education Department is misinterpreting Congress’ intent and that the administration has shown little willingness to work on the issue.

“The Department of Education is just over their skis on this and has not been channeling congressional intent,” said Sen. Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.). The agency “has been more than a little tone-deaf on this and not as responsive as I would like to see.”

The debate that has ensued is now cutting at a longtime intraparty divide between Democrats from states with a long heritage of hunting and the more progressive corners of the party that back strict gun control measures.

Al-Qaida is resurging in Afghanistan. The militant group is recruiting, raising funds, positioning itself to conduct long-distance attacks, even upping its propaganda, and remains close to the Taliban.

That’s according to a new UN Security Council report, compiled with intelligence from member states. The report, released by the UN office monitoring international sanctions on the Taliban, has further claimed that al-Qaida’s core – under Dr. Ayman al-Zawahri’s leadership and estimated to be several dozen-people strong – is located in eastern Afghanistan’s Zabul and Kunar provinces, along the border with Pakistan, where the terrorists have enjoyed a “historical presence.” It also noted that some members were reportedly living in Kabul’s former diplomatic quarters, where they have access to the Taliban-run Ministry for Foreign Affairs, though this wasn’t confirmed by the investigators.
