Texting While Walking Banned in New Jersey Town (ABC News)

Avid texters beware: Fort Lee, N.J. police said they will begin issuing $85 jaywalking tickets to pedestrians who are caught texting while walking.

"It's a big distraction. Pedestrians aren't watching where they are going and they are not aware," said Thomas Ripoli, chief of the Fort Lee Police Department.

Ripoli said the borough, which is home to approximately 35,000 residents, has suffered three fatal pedestrian-involved accidents this year. He hopes his crackdown on people who display dangerous behavior while walking will make his town safer, but not everyone is on board with the idea of issuing $85 tickets.

"When I walk I still look around. I'm not like constantly looking down the whole time," said resident Sue Choe.

Another woman complained about the tickets were "a lot of money."

Officers handed out pamphlets during a short grace period in March before they began aggressively going after "dangerous walkers."

Another useless communist law like wearing your seat belt is a communist law. Now why dont the ACLU challege this to the US Supreme Court as a violation of the 1st amendment? And Both republicans and democrats when they write their own laws they dont have to follow them. Just like Jon Corzine didnt wear his seat belt and that chickenshit NJ State Trooper didnt have the guts to give his own boss a ticket. I wonder will Governor Chris Christie get a ticket when hes texting while walking? Hmmmm?

Mitt Romney and Obama are not the same.

Mitt claims to buy into man made global warming and that bugs me but thats about it. Perhaps one more thing but I can't think of it off hand.

There a many differences between BO and Mitt. The biggest one is Mitt is NOT anti-American.

BO is a socialist. Mitt is a free market capitalist with lots of progressive crap thrown in.

I can't help but think Mitt and Bush are the ones who are the same.

Do you really think wearing a seat belt is a useless communist law? Does that include children in car seats? And, how is that a violation of the 1st Amendment?

Driving is a privilege given by the state and subjected to the states laws. Texting and walking is another matter. Although, I am not so sure this law is so bad.

given other things that get seen as free speech I can see where it could be seen to apply here. thats not an endorsement as I don't believe those other things are free speech.

I was going to say in my first post that Mitt was more like Bush but I stopped myself. I am not sure he will be, I hope he wont be (the bad parts) of Bush. Bush spent far too much money hell he gave more to AIDS in Africa with the swipe of a pen than Clinton gave in 8 years. I hope Romney wont do that sort of stuff.

Really? So now texting and driving or texting and walking is a racial matter? Not real sure what texting and racial profiling have in common. I have never seen a fine for DWB either. And, I am pretty sure that police harassment crosses racial lines. But, most of all ... I still don't have a clue what any of that has to do with the 1st Amendment.

Texting is freedom of speech. Just like nobody cant do anything to DR Phil when he says the word penis on the air. And none does anything about Zooey Deschanel when she says Penis on that TV show "New Girl" but when Howard Stern uses it on the radio airwaves FCC slaps him with an $10,000 fine. But what about Howard Sterns 1st Amendment rights?

So now we're talking about penises? Hold on ... I'm having trouble keeping "up". ;) OK ... Here's the deal. While I will not disagree about the inconsistencies of the FCC, after all it's a government entity, that should be enough said, I do not see how under any circumstances the act of texting represents Freedom of Speech. How do we know these idiots aren't playing "Farmville" while walking in front of traffic? Regulating texting and walking or driving does not represent the limiting of Freedom of Speech in anyway. I am a staunch Constitutionalist and if I saw any merit in this I would be in total disagreement. But, as ridiculous as this law may seem ... I simply am not seeing it!

Seat belt, Helmet, Texting laws...All examples of how our Rights are abridged by government through popular public support.

"Since the general civilization of mankind, I believe there are more instances of the abridgment of the freedom of the people by gradual and silent encroachments of those in power, than by violent and sudden usurpations; but, on a candid examination of history, we shall find that turbulence, violence, and abuse of power, by the majority trampling on the rights of the minority, have produced factions and commotions, which, in republics, have, more frequently than any other cause, produced despotism. If we go over the whole history of ancient and modern republics, we shall find their destruction to have generally resulted from those causes" - James Madison

BTW Steve... I thought you liked Communism... You said before that it was superior to Capitalism, yet in this post you are equating Communism with a totalitarian state. Should I bother asking you to explain?

Now you see America is not a safe country to live in. Its because of Cops not doing their jobs. Now theyre are some police depts can choose not to enforce certain laws. Like for example look at Arizona Sheriffs dept who wont enforce illegal immingration law that was signed by governor Jan Brewer
http://abcnews.go.com/WN/protestors-arizona-immigration-bill-urge-boycott-state/story?id=10487582

Now you see why youre much safer in Canada and in Japan? Cause cops there dont enforce petty stuff like Texting laws, Illegal prositution laws,,Petty traffic laws. They get more seroius stuff like Murder,Robbery,Rape,Car Theft,Mugging and Assults.
