Review of the previous two communiques:
One
Same Day Registration - Epic Fail - in this issue we learned
- Some County Boards of Elections don't send out New Voter Verification cards to any new voters until after the County Canvass (10 days after Election Day),
- The most recent Numbered Memo we could find on this issue was from 2016. (Numbered Memos are communications from the NCSBE Executive Director giving instructions and clarification to County Boards of Election.)
- 6,141 statewide: the number of new voters who (based on the election data) didn't have a new voter verification mailing printed for them at all as of 11/19/2022. This is a violation of G.S. 163-82.7(c).
No need to send those pesky Voter Verification Cards -
we verify the voters' information when they apply.
We must trust that's happening in all Counties, 100% of the time. We're expected to rely on The Honor System. ...
It appears Verifying Voters after they've first applied
or requested changes is a systemic problem,
not isolated only to the Same Day Registration issue.
THE HONOR SYSTEM
Voters are allowed to cast a ballot,
Election Results are Certified in 100 Counties,
then later it's determined whether or not the Voters who were Not Yet Verified
actually do reside where they claimed.
BUT DID IT AFFECT THE OUTCOME OF ANY ELECTION?
That question - that standard for how much inaccuracy in the Official Election Results we are willing to tolerate - is, well, infuriating.
It is every LEGALLY REGISTERED VOTERS' Constitutional right to not have our votes diluted by the votes from invalid ballots. It would be so refreshing if someone in the General Assembly or at the State Board of Elections would focus their attention on ensuring not one invalid ballot disenfranchises the legal voters, regardless of the number who were disenfranchised. Your spouse's ballot, your grandparents' ballots, your neighbors' ballots: EACH ONE MATTERS.
