That is a severe flaw in all democratic systems... once the opportunity for power, greed and power are irresistible temptations.

I think that was the original idea or concept behind the Electoral College. Citizens vote for a group of esteemed and knowledgeable delegates to the Electoral College. The College then selects the people to represent us. Not only would we get higher quality representatives in Washington, but the Electoral College would act as a check and balance to make certain the representatives were acting in the best interest of the citizens as a whole (and not special interest groups.

No, that has been changed too. The Constitution allows the States to select the method they wished to choose delegates to the Electoral College. Initially the State legislature made the selection. However, as political parties were formed, the State legislature handed that right to a vote by the people.

That was okay for a while until the States decided that the majority of the vote took all of the delegates from the winning political party (known as winner take all). The idea of learned individuals being selected by the legislature to choose President, we now have an Electoral College were party politics have completely distorted what I consider a pretty good idea.

Again, take the power away from people and give it to Washington. We are on the road to disaster.

however the parties saw to it that this mechinism eas disabled.
government was invented to remove chance from who and how wealth would be taken from the economy.
with kings etc you never knew when one would attack another caising disruption in the flow of money.
