As Georgia rolls out new voting machines for 2020, worries about election security persist
Some touch screens flipped voters’ selections from one party to the other, and ballots would “self-cast,” among other issues, according to dozens of affidavits submitted by voters in various state and federal court cases.
But election security experts said the state’s newest voting machines also remain vulnerable to potential intrusions or malfunctions — and some view the paper records they produce as insufficient if a verified audit of the vote is needed.
The concerns in Georgia come as paperless machines are set to be used in parts of at least half a dozen states in 2020 — a practice that leading experts and government officials warn is risky.
In a declaration filed in the federal case, Andrew Appel, a professor of computer science at Princeton University, said the ballot-marking devices — like any computer — can still be hacked.
“If hacked, they can systematically change votes from what the voter indicated on the touch screen when printed on the paper ballot; few voters will notice, and those that notice have only the mitigation that they might be able to correct their own ballots, not their neighbors; and finally, recounts or audits will see only the fraudulently marked paper,” he wrote.

No intelligent and informed American believes voting systems are not vulnerable to voting fraud. If evidence seems to indicate fraud then there is no defense against claims of fraud except debunking the claims with evidence, not opinions and assumptions.

But here we are again, reflecting on the “impossible” voting machine vulnerability that Democrats once touted as a possibility — a reality, even.
Take a look at this damning video tweet from activist Jack Posobiec that compiles opinions from various Democratic officials who once preached the possibility of hacked voting machines.
“I continue to think that our voting machines are too vulnerable,” Rep. Adam Schiff of California said.
“The biggest seller of voting machines is doing something that violates cybersecurity 101,” Oregon Sen. Ron Wyden argued later in the clip, “directing that you install remote access software which would make a thing like that — you know — a magnet for fraudsters and hackers.”
Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar — who was also among the slew of Democrats eager to become the party’s 2020 nominee — also joined in on the “conspiracy.”
“You could easily hack into [voting machines]. It makes it seem like all these states are doing different things, but, in fact, three companies are controlling [elections].”
The real kicker is then-Sen. Kamala Harris’ repeated appearances throughout the video.
It’s incredibly ironic considering the contention surrounding her assumed role as “second in command.”
“There are a lot of states that are dealing with antiquated machines, right? Which are vulnerable to being hacked,” Harris said in one segment.
“I actually held a demonstration for my colleagues here at the Capitol where we brought in folks who — before our eyes — hacked election machines, those that are being used in many states,” she added in a separate piece.
