House of Raeford is also closing its turkey hatchery in Rose Hill and ending its relationship with about 140 turkey farmers in eastern North Carolina.
Company spokesman Dave Witter says severance packages are being offered to those who stay until the plant closes.
The company said in March that higher corn prices, falling turkey prices and flat turkey consumption in recent years have made the business unprofitable.
The company says it will focus on chicken products, which account for more than 90 percent of its sales.
The slaughterhouse is the largest employer in Raeford.
The company will still employ more than 2,000 people in North Carolina after the closings, including 400 at a plant in Raeford where they cook turkeys to package and sell in grocery stores.

In June 2014 animal rights activists sneaked into the plant and filmed what they claimed were abuses of turkeys. In October 2014 the owner of the plant announced he was done dealing with leftists and other enemies of business and was shutting down his plant. He did shut down the plant and we can thank the leftists for costing 1,000 people their jobs in a rural county with few job opportunities available.

In 2014 leftist activists sneaked into the Raeford plant and produced a doctored film designed to make stupid viewers think they were doing something evil in their turkey processing. That was all a lie, but lawsuits followed and the owner seemed to have had enough because just a few months later he closed the plant down for good.

I sympathize with the man. Successful businessmen like him were constantly being harassed by morons who thought he was greedy for being successful. They thought he was evil because he did not pay his workers the same amount he paid himself. The government heaped oppressive burdens on him in the name of safety and oversight, as if he did not know how to run his business safely and not know how to insure his products were safe for consumption. I don't blame him for taking his wealth and shutting up shop like so many rich businessmen do when their taxes are raised too high or the regulatory burdens become unbearable.

Democrats do not know how to create good business environments. Their expertise is taking money from businessmen and the economy and redistributing it to themselves, their friends, and their supporters.
