December 25th, Christ born in Bethlehem, Judea. This day, December 25, 336, is the first recorded celebration of Christmas. For the first three hundred years of the church's existence, birthdays were not given much emphasis--not even the birth of Christ.

Xmas has nothing to do with gifts or winter holiday.

The tradition of gifts was a part of the ceremony because the Magi (assumed to be Zoroastrian priests) brought gifts. Best guess is that Jesus was born between May and October (when shepherds would have been in that area grazing) and some year between 4 and 6 BCE.

OF COURSE Christmas is related to gift giving ( because of the Magi) and winter (because the Church decided to celebrate Christmas in December, which is of course in the winter.
