But the US is not "energy independent", because it imports oil that its refineries can refine, and exports oil that they cannot. Oil from differemnt locatins varies greatly from one place to another, and refineries have to adapt their methods and equipment to suit the petroleum they refine.

The term "Energy Independent" is a bogus term. To make it otherwise, the US government would be in charge of drilling, transporting, refining and distribution of all oil it consumes and would import none. And that will not happen.
