Taiwan, formally known as the Republic of China is located just 100 miles off the coast of mainland China. It is a small island nation of approximately 23,000,000 people. It is the one of the last areas of traditional China that is not under "communism." However the PRC (People's Republic of China) claims Taiwan as a sovereign territory of greater China and suggests that it is an administrative district. Many that inhabit Taiwan are mainland refuges who escaped Mao Zedong's People's Liberation Army during the Chinese Civil War in 1949. Since then "Chinese Nationalism" has merely existed only on this small Island. Headed by Chiang Kai-shek, the Chinese Nationalist party known as the Kuomintang ruled over Taiwan for 51 years under martial law until the year 2000 when President Chen Shui-bian of the Democratic Progressive Party was elected to lead Taiwan. Because of his less aggressive liberal party in power, talks of independence are being mentioned. For a long while many Taiwanese citizens have favored an independent nation free of Chinese bullying, the fundamental complication with an independence movement is increased hostility of the PRC. Mainland China has expressed publicly that they will peruse military action if Taiwan furthers its independence movement, which brings us to a tragic climax. So why is this wroth a posting? Because of the United States' shameful involvement in this matter! Currently the diplomatic relations with the U.S. and Taiwan are virtually nonexistent. The U.S. stopped diplomatic relations with Taiwan in 1979 because the "communist" Chinese wanted us to! Being the money-loving-betraying-ethics-for-profit capitalist's that we are, we began relations with mainland China because our "entrepreneurs" saw that Taiwan was economically weak and China was economically strong. Today China is one of the most unethical countries in the world; it has numerously failed to offer natural rights to its citizens including human rights and freedom of thought. And yet, the United States is willing to bend over backward to cater for a country that contradicts every constitutional right given to a U.S. citizen while a model democracy is being neglected and ignored. And it is all so simple! The reason why the U.S. cut off relations with Taiwan and began relations with China is because we are afraid. China is on the verge of passing us as a world power. We've seen through time the Cold War as a success of capitalism and the destruction of communism. If that is true, then why are we voluntarily making China stronger while a prosperous nation like Taiwan is being neglected?
