In India, Obama Courts Corporate America

MUMBAI, India — President Obama, fresh off a stinging electoral defeat for Democrats, opened a 10-day tour of Asia on Saturday with a courtship of corporate America, including private meetings with American business executives who are here for his visit and an announcement that he will lift longstanding restrictions on exports of closely held technologies to India.

I'm surprised we don't have a thread on this trip already.

Net gain for the US, or net loss? What is your opinion?

I posted on this outrageously expensive trip by the King BO and Queen Michelle.

I am willing to bet the farm that anywhere our Marxist President goes will not benefit the USA. But, I suppose there is a very small chance he does something good for America. Most like he will do something bad for America.

Yes, I read about the expense of the trip being outrageously exaggerated, based on a report by a journalist in India, and picked up by the right wing here.

As for Marxist, it is much like socialist:

be fair, at least gipper proved that no amount of lack of facts, or complete lack of logic would stop him from posting incorrect info to attack Obama...so at least we have that :)

I have no idea what way this will go, but i think we will not know for some time regardless...we need more open trade overseas, but of course we can't keep shipping all of a low wage and unskilled work overseas at the same time.

Zero benefit, huge cost. Piss poor timing given Helicopter Ben's currency manipulation. Par for he course for tht organizer in chief.

what is the cost? And when is the good time? you know that works for all nations things where we want, and nothing here at home...would Dec have worked better for you? also of course trip like this would be planned months and months in advance, so no you don't get to actuly know what will be going on when you go...

"The commercial deals he announced include the purchase of 33 737s from Boeing by India's SpiceJet Airlines; the Indian military's plans to buy aircraft engines from General Electric; and preliminary agreement between Boeing and the Indian Air Force on the purchase of 10 C17s.

For the most part, the deals were already pending, but the White House contends Obama's visit to India helped finalize them. Officials said the deals would support 53,670 U.S. jobs, but it was not clear how many, if any, new jobs would be created as a result."

just a start of course

I really dont see the big deal with this... Besides the the obviously fake cost of the trip what could you possibly have against this?

As you allude to but fail to admit, the deals were already done. Why ? Timing. this was the third go round for the attempt. No public display happens unless the deal is done. This trip does nothing but flatter India but even in that we fail with the Sikh gaffe, teleprompters and lost PR war on exorbitant cost (they will be reporting India's portion at some point and the locals won't be happy).

Deals between heads of state are govt to govt, not planes and parts.

Lost PR war...aka the Right lies and makes **** it, and white house follows normal security rules and does not give amounts....and you have nothing to back anything up...because its hard to back up facts that are not true...

The pres is a Democrat, and therefore evil. Anything he does is evil, because he's a Democrat. It's all quite logical, in a circular sort of way.

I wonder why a socialist/marxist would be courting corporations? Maybe that's just what evil Marxist/Socialist/Democrats do, just to fool us into thinking that they're really into capitalism.

AFTER his “shellacking,” President Obama had to do something. But who had the bright idea of scheduling his visit to India for right after this election? The Democrats’ failure to create jobs was at the heart of the shellacking. Nothing says “outsourcing” to the American public more succinctly than India. But the White House didn’t figure this out until the eve of Obama’s Friday departure, when it hastily rebranded his trip as a jobs mission. Perhaps the president should visit one of the Indian call centers policing Americans’ credit-card debts to feel our pain.

Optics matter. If Washington is tumbling into a political crisis as the recovery continues to lag, maybe the president shouldn’t get out of Dodge. If the White House couldn’t fill a 13,000-seat arena in blue Cleveland the weekend before the midterms, maybe it shouldn’t have sent the president there. If an administration charged with confronting a Great Recession knew that its nominee for secretary of the Treasury serially cut corners on his taxes, maybe it should have considered other options. Shoulda, woulda, coulda. Well, here we are.

He gave a speech to their congress, pointing out he came to them first on his asia junket, and is staying there the longest. What was THAT for? Did he expect them to respond "O we are not worthy, Annointed One!" The arrogance of this incompentent mediocre ghetto politician continues to amaze.
