Why does Hamas have hostages? Well, Hamas does not want to be attacked by massive bombs attacks, So it hides hostages among its members, knowing that the IDF does not want to risk killing hostages. I agree that this is rather cowardly, but it also makes logical sense.

The real way to fight a war is for only the soldiers to line up facing one another, as in the Braveheart movie. Or perhaps at the First Battle at Manassas. No hostages necessary, no civilians threatened.

There was still some trickery: the British dressed its soldiers in red tunics, so it was not obvious if they were bleeding. The French wore blue, and the Americans also wore blue when they managed to get a nice French uniform. The problem in the American Revolution was that the British and their ,mercenary allies, the Hessians were better trained at face to face warfare and tended to win. If Washington had stuck to the proper etiquette of war, we would all be Canadians.
