I have been a follower of politics for a number of years now. In fact since I began on this board many of you have seen my development. In the beginning I was sure that politics itself was the problem; if politicians could just get past the inherent problems of the system then daily problems could get solved. But it soon became clear that one party was far superior to the other party in terms of policies that were good for the whole country instead of just good for a few constituents.

Over the years, I have noticed, that my pastor for example, is as far as I can tell, apolitical. He focuses on the greater truths of God and lets politics fall where it may. Commendable, but great pastors in the past were not apolitical - they engaged the populace to make an impact for the better. Jesus was not apolitical. Maybe a problem we have in politics as that too many pastors and people of faith are apolitical. In general too many people are apathetic.

I don't have high hopes for the people losing their apathy. I doubt the much maligned (and why?) Tea Party can get past its seemingly odd mixture of simultaneous energy and withdrawal. I doubt the majority of good people can stop focusing on their own families. I doubt the ignorant masses can become educated. I doubt these people can ever overcome the persistent control of what is on their minds by those in power.

How can the Average Joe ever be a force for good if the very arguments we debate are all determined by those who do not want us to be looking at what is really going on. The latest scandal is nothing compared to our problems. The government shutdown is not the big picture. We are the audience and the magician so cleverly misdirects our attention.

Recently I have been looking at aspects of our economy that I have not looked at in this way before. I see how powerful players manipulate the markets - but not just the markets - they manipulate the data we all use to think about the markets. But not just that, they control the very system that makes everything work. And these people are not just Democrats or Republicans (that is a meaningless distinction), they are not just rich and poor (though they tend to be rich), They are not just politicians or business as these two forces both cooperate and compete with each other in this game they use to own their slice of the world.

They are not a grand conspiracy either. What they are in a nutshell is people who want power. And power being the ability to make change this is neither good nor bad in itself. I want power to feed my family and that is good. I have no doubt that some of these people want power for noble intentions. But a great many of the powerful want power just to be powerful (a truism of sorts).

They are all too successful. They do indeed have so much power. I am less than a cog in a gear that runs the system they use to gain power. I contribute in a small way to their power just by being. And if I drop out who do I hurt most but me? If I fight back I become a small two bit player vying for the same power they already have. I would be no different. All that is left to me is to pray and love my Lord. Who knows, is that really what I should have been doing all along. In the world but not of the world?

What will become of this world? I imagine what will come based on my incomplete understanding which I am thinking is far greater than that of a random man on the street: the powerful get more power and they control an ever widening circle of influence over my (and your) life. They become the paternalist who both takes charge and takes care of us for our own good (but mostly for theirs). They know that for as powerful as they are they too individually do not have that much power. They can't step out of the game and yet they must see the train wreck coming. There is a good chance the economy will crash on a major scale. Many of the powerful will lose their fortunes as will just about every middle class person in the set of nations most effected. The poor will have entitlements and the middle class will be poor sharing in those entitlements alike. Do we need Obamacare? The nannies have taken over the household and when it is on fire all the children must run to them or perish. As long as they are intent on being the nanny; the pater; the wet nurse; the governess, then they must also take care of us or watch us all die. Most are not so cruel so they are quite willing to take on more power and take on the role of feeding and clothing and providing healthcare for all the sucklings. With whatever morality they have they have no choice but to offer medicaid, medicare, obamacare, and a thousand others ending in care.

This is an end result of the evil that infects the world. Pour too much salt in the dough and the yeast may yet die off but that will be one horrible tasting flat loaf of bread and the mob will not stand a day without their brioche let alone a lowly donut. A revolution might reverse course for a bit but the wheels will keep turning much the same but with new bosses. It could even turn out worse for a time. A monetary collapse which I think is the less likely of the problems we face could cause the world to turn toward socialism rather than against. The masses will clamor for help and the powerful will be all to willing to give it on their terms.

This ambassador is disillusioned and is tempted to bury my silver in the ground where it will not grow but at least will not be lost.

I've been seeing the world upside down lately, but maybe it's always been that way.

My parents and grandparents generations knew real poverty without nanny government handouts, two world wars and two deep depressions.

I've never gone through anything like that, so I refuse to get depressed. If America crashes, then the people will rally and build her back up...regardless of the politics.

I think you're comparing 21st. century America, not with the real past, but with an ideal that never has been and probably never will be.

Look around, and things look pretty grim: the debt, apathy, gangs, murders, unemployment, the list goes on and on. It would be easy to become disillusioned and begin to believe that our two hundred plus year experiment in self governance was a failure.

But, we've been through hard times before. Was there a more positive outlook during the great depression? How about when there was a real chance that Nazism could have taken over Europe and come to our shores next? Maybe the 1960's were a rosier time, what with a generation ready to turn on, tune in, and drop out. The next decade brought an end to the first war we ever lost, but also brought double digit inflation and an economy that makes the current one actually appear to be pretty good by comparison.

There are challenges. There have always been challenges. Today, we have a dysfunctional government, which is a challenge, we have massive unemployment and under employment. We don't live in a utopia.

But, then, we never have.

Double digit inflation was brought on by a passive socialist government .... aka the Carter Administration. Obama is the Carter Administration on steroids! And the point that it was worse than what we are facing today is certainly debatable!

Today's challenges are different. They are the results of Communist policies in play right here at home. Not the threat of Communism arriving at our shores like in the past.

It is here and the results of those policies are in play. The future is predictable simply because there is decades of data from the past of how these policies played out in other countries.

America as we have known it in the past will not survive these challenges.

Dr. Who is correct in his skepticism of the future of this Country!

Words have meanings, real ones.

Communism can be used as a word describing whatever politics you dislike, or it can be used in the proper way.

Socialism can be used the same way, and often is.

The inflation and economic malaise of the late '70s was not brought about by "socialism", i.e., government policies with which you disagree. It was brought about by OPEC and the increase in the world price of oil.

It is what it is, facts are what they are.

Words do have real meanings ..... and I meant every bit of the words I used. Obama's policies are Marxist policies .... and the effects are obvious ....

And, yes OPEC played a big part of what happened in the 70's but, that is not the whole story and YOU should know that!

Just wanted to say, I enjoy reading your post and Very well said , But it has a simple answer ..The truth will set you free ..That was what Jesus told us..

read my post to Doc, it was before I read yours....

Unfortunately, our government has become a predatory government. Instead of a government consisting of "We the people" we have an elitist government that has morphed into a government that caters to the aristocracy or the wealthy 1% of America. This government takes every opportunity to steal middle class money and tells us it is for our collective benefit. It passes laws that are clearly in violation of the Constitution of the United States and then asks the Supreme Court to rubber stamp them. I suppose this is done to convince "We the people" that this government is behaving lawfully and responsibly. I call it the theater of the absurd. That is the same crap that King George III tried to pull on us. He wanted to control us and steal our money. He was willing to send troops to threaten and then kill us over the issue and so it was. We had us a war with some bloodshed.

It's always about money. The absolute root of all evil.

In America, our government has a long standing tradition of labeling immoral or criminal acts with palatable terms so that they can behave like criminals without public retribution or outcry. They do the exact opposite when some other entity engages in the same behavior. Sometimes Americans sign onto this madness as long as there is something in it for them. Like killing native Americans because it was "God's manifest destiny" for us. Sorry Indians, God doesn't like you. Citizens who worked hard and saved gold in 1933 were labeled "gold hoarders" about the time that FDR issued an executive order- no law was passed- authorizing the government to seize gold without a warrant to prevent "gold hoarding." If the government doesn't like the negative connotations of a term such as "kidnapping" they substitute that term for "relocation" as was the case of WWII era Japanese Americans. If the government and the elite don't like the term "counterfeiting" because that denotes precisely what it is- they use the term "quantitative easing" instead. They tell us that they are diluting our money supply for our own good. When the government gets caught violating the law, they label the whistleblower(s) a "traitor" rather than a hero as was the case of Edward Snowden. People are not murdered by drones- they are "victims" or "casualties" or "enemy combatants" or "collateral damage."These things have been going on for a very long time..AND

We allow the government to essentially violate any law it wants to- just so long as they can find some innocuous term for their immoral conduct that sits well with us.But the truth has set me free ... And I am aware of whats going on...

Oh, I have no doubt you meant exactly what you said. The problem is, the words you used don't have the meanings you've ascribed to them.

And OPEC was definitely the driving force behind the inflation and high interest rates of the late 70's. There may have been other things going on as well at the time, but that was the root cause of the economic distress that the western world, not just the USA, was experiencing.

That is your opinion of my comment and is not supported by the facts and actions of this administration.

To suggest that OPEC's actions alone were the majority reason for Carter's failed presidency is not only spin but, naive as well.

Carter mishandled the OPEC crisis by imposing rations on gasoline, and home heating oil and placing tariffs on imported oil. This caused America to literally run out of gas and what gas could be purchased was paid for at outrageous prices. This was clearly caused by Carter's actions and policy and the way he handled the OPEC crisis.

Carter's failed economic policies of government spending and indecision led to "stagflation" and the results were high prices, high unemployment, low confidence, and low growth.

You can see Obama creating these same results with his Carter-like aka liberal policies.
