The atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki could have been avoided if the Japanese leadership had shown more flexibility to surrender but the emperor was too preoccupied with preserving his status as a living god and he refused to succumb to American demands until the second atomic bomb was dropped and it saved millions of lives which could have been sacrificed to defend the Japanese mainland.
