So there is this product that is made in China and sells for perhaps 50¢ and retails for a dollar. Then Trump slaps a 10% tariff on it, and the wholesaler pays 55¢ for it. So the retailer now needs to sell it for $1.10 to make the same return on investment.
China does not pay the tariff, the tariff is paid by the wholesaler who passes it on to the customer.
