Kamala Harris omitted God and the “right to life” when she quoted the Declaration of Independence in a speech Sunday marking the 50th anniversary of Roe v. Wade.
The Biden administration leader only mentioned the rights to “liberty and the pursuit of happiness” in her address to a crowd of abortion activists in Tallahassee, Florida. She also insisted that aborting unborn babies for any reason without limits is a “fundamental right.”
“Last June, the United States Supreme Court took away that constitutional right — a fundamental right, a basic freedom from the people of America, from the women of America,” Harris said, referring to the Dobbs v. Jackson ruling that overturned Roe.
Later, she continued: “So we are here together because we collectively believe and know America is a promise … of freedom and liberty — not for some, but for all. A promise we made in the Declaration of Independence that we are each ‘endowed with the right to liberty and the pursuit of happiness.’”
However, Harris omitted several key phrases from the quote. The Declaration of Independence states, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

The American founders listed the right to life first because life is the most fundamental right of all. Without it, no other right can exist. Under Roe, abortions destroyed that fundamental right for more than 64 million unborn babies, and only now that Roe has been overturned may states again protect the right to life for all human beings, born and unborn.
Harris also left out the phrase that says rights are “endowed by their Creator,” or God, and she did so intentionally.
“Be clear: These rights were not bestowed upon us. They belong to us as Americans,” she told the pro-abortion crowd.
Afterward, Republican commentator Matt Whitlock said Harris’s omissions show just how indefensible her pro-abortion position is.
“This point is obvious but when the ‘right to life’ blows up your message so bad you have to pretend it doesn’t exist then maybe your message isn’t very good,” Whitlock wrote on Twitter.
Since the Supreme Court overturned Roe, 14 states have begun protecting unborn babies from abortion and more are fighting in court to do so. Pro-life leaders estimate tens of thousands of unborn babies’ lives already have been saved as a result of state pro-life laws.
Two new polls show growing public support for legal protections for unborn babies. Last week, a Marist College poll found 69 percent of Americans support limiting or banning abortions, up from 62 percent in June. Another new poll from UMass Amherst found a 5-percent drop in those who say Congress should pass a law to make abortions legal nation-wide and a 6-percent increase in support for a national abortion ban, WCVB News reports.
