The military did what it does in a lot of cases: some in the chain feared the publicity would be upset if they found out Tillman (a high profile soldier) was killed accidentally. Better to make it seem like it was a heroic death and present that face to the public. But in this day and age lies don't die, they get exposed and instead of a small incident they now have a full blown fiasco on their hands. I've seen it happen many times in my military career and unfortunately the system just doesn't seem to change. The ugly truth is less damaging than the ugly lie that ends up blowing up in your face.
