We discuss the terms "conservative" and "liberal" as standpoints on the political spectrum, not as specific ideologies. The more liberal standpoints you take the more liberal you (and the farther left you go the more liberal you are) whereas the more conservative your standpoints, the more conservative you are. A conservative might have several liberal standpoints that offset him a little to the left of other conservatives (look at Rudy Guliani). Even independents identify themselves along these lines. You can have vastly different opinions on different issues but in the end those ideas are always liberal or conservative (or that elusive third option, centrist) and when all of your ideas are assessed together it'll come out whether you are more liberal or conservative.
