Training police and army is a key part of the US strategy in Iraq
A $1.2bn (£590m) contract for training Iraqi police was so badly managed that auditors do not know how the money was spent, the US state department says.

The programme was run by a private US company, DynCorp. It insists there has been no intentional fraud.

Auditors have stopped trying to audit the programme because all the documents are in disarray and the government is trying to retrieve some of the money.

Training Iraqis to take over security is a key part of US strategy.

Correspondents say this case is the latest to highlight problems linked to private companies being awarded lucrative government contracts in Iraq.

More mismanagement and blatant disregard for the mission by our government. Yes, they contracted with a private company, but who was overseeing this project!? Do they just let the reigns loose with a thumbs up and "good luck" or....?

We could only be so lucky to have it be a "Republican" "neocon" or Bush problem. If it was, we could simply vote out of office "Republican" and "neocon" candidates, or wait for the end of Bush's term, and the problem would be gone. We have a long history of $1000 toilet seats and $500 screws. Throw the fog of war into the mix and we shouldnt be surprised that it gets even worse. We can only hope at least some of the missing 1.2 billion was actually spent on training Iraqis, and the expenditures simply cant be accounted for through documentation, as opposed to ending up in the pocket of some dynacorp fat cat.
I think we can always count on government to be inefficient, wasteful and corrupt with money. The best solution is to give them less of it.
