Putin did no invade Ukraine when Trump was president because he did not have the resources. The Saudis and the rest of OPEC began collaborating on cutting oil production, which was low because the Covid crisis reduced demand. No amount of US sanctions could prevent Russia from selling oil once demand had taken off again. Putin is not afraid of Trump. He considers him a "useful idiot". He wants Trump to be president, because he wants to see chaos in the US and possibly the weakening or total demise of NATO.
