This did not happen to Bush less than a year into office. Sure there were some crazies who were up in arms over the Supreme Court decision. Otherwise the Democrats largely gave Bush much leeway until the Patriot Act and also the bogus WMD claims justifying Iraq.
We are less than a year into the Obama Administration and the extreme right is already having a collective meltdown. I wonder how many of those same right wing zealots would sign up for a public option?
Bunz, you've made an excellent point here, and I hope you will truly take it to heart. You say "Sure there were some crazies..." Well, anyone advocating violence against our president is exactly that, no matter which side it comes from.
You mention the leeway given Bush. That would not have happened if the tragedy of 9/11 hadn't occurred. There were many who may have otherwise been hyper-critical of Bush that set it aside, being truly more interested in helping our country pull together and prove to ourselves and the world that we would not be victimized by terrorist thugs.
The extreme right is exactly... who? I see very, very few in anything close to a meltdown. Some cite Limbaugh, Beck, Hannity, etc. Yet while they feel and express very clearly their marked conviction that PBO is sending us rapidly into a full-blown Fascist state, and threatening many of the institutions and concepts that have made America great and strong, there isn't a meltdown going on. If that were the case, they'd be on the air, urging people to stock up on food, water, gasoline - whatever might be needed with a "siege" mentality.
History has proven again and again that the socialist/communist/marxist/fascist policies of governments have never produced anything close to the freedoms and prosperity we as Americans should cherish. This, in a nutshell, is what we are fighting for. We are committed to standing against those who would force the destruction of our American way of life down our throats, even if they have a charming smile and warm words of it being for our own good.
Many of us cannot imagine how fragile our rights and freedoms truly are. We cannot come close to being able to grasp a picture of how bad things could actually get, even here in the good old U.S.
Some pro-life advocates believe we are engaged in a war, and with holy mandate to protect innocent lives. They are a small minority, and the large majority firmly believe that taking a life, endangering a life, threatening bodily harm - none are acceptable as a counter position against abortion.
So to, there may be loonies in any fringe of any group who would advocate assassination. NO reasoning, freedom-loving American should hold that attitude. A stupid poster of a poll on Facebook? A forum entry here and there? An idiot holding a sign at a rally of some sort? I condemn them all. Yet I will take it much more as a serious threat when we see the books written and the movie produced advocating such as we did against President Bush.
