This is a free country - anyone can develope their own take on religion, or no religion at all.  It becomes an issue for the public at large when a candidate has as a close personal adviser a religious leader whose perceptions are widely viewed as departing from their values, or even widely varying from reality, because it raises questions about the judgement and character of the candidate.
