The recent poll that revealed only 20% of Americans would publicly admit to being a Republican shouldn't be all that much of a surprise. Today's crop of prominent Republicans, while spanning a wide spectrum, all seem to fall in the category of some very strange characters. Sarah Palin, teabaggers, birthers, deathers, Joe The Plumber, hate spewing radio personalities, science deniers, weepy tv commentators, on and on... it's a cast of characters that all come across as cartoonish. That doesn't slow down the affection Republicans are prepared to heap on them, or their hunger to showcase them as the face of their party. They seem oblivious to how loony it makes them appear to Americans to embrace this cast of characters.
At the recent Republican Value Voter Conference a wide variety of speakers were invited to address their group. One of the featured speakers was Carrie Prejean. She's the new darling of the GOP. Carrie is the former Miss California. She was the favorite to win the the Miss USA crown until she reached the portion of contest where the beauty queens had to answer questions.
She used that opportunity to speak out against gays, establishing her claim that marriage should strictly follow the explicit directions of The Bible. That position is most likely what cost her the crown. Carrie wanted to project herself as a staunch Christian, using literal interpretations of The Bible to reference how she believed others should lead their lives. Later she was stripped of her title as Miss California after she became an internet sensation when her previously undisclosed topless modeling photos were discovered and circulated. Combining that with her repeated failure to honor her contractual appearance obligations resulted in her firing.
Then she resurfaced at the Republican Value Voter Conference. She wanted to speak out against "intolerance", not the variety of intolerance she expressed as a pageant contestant, but against the intolerance against her intolerance. And yes, she is a blond. Now that's an interesting concept. She was celebrated by the Republican attendees because she was intolerant of those that were intolerant of her intolerance. That logic seemed to make sense to the assembled wingnuts.
Carrie had a lawsuit filed against pageant officials claiming "religious discrimination" and it came to an abrupt end this week. CNN has now discovered why. It seems the defrocked pageant queen, the one who wanted to establish herself as a staunch, moralistic, super christian, except for the topless pics, had another skeleton in her closest. You've already figured out what's coming. Yes, her sex tape has surfaced.
According to the CNN story, "The veil of secrecy was partially lifted Wednesday after celebrity gossip website TMZ reported the deal was sealed after pageant lawyers presented an "extremely graphic" home video involving Prejean. TMZ Managing Editor Harvey Levin said during a webcast Wednesday that he obtained the Prejean video during the summer, but found it "too racy" to post on his site. He indicated Prejean was alone in the video. The source with knowledge of the settlement talks told CNN those details were accurate."
Those Republicans sure have an unusual cast of heros.
