Thomas Jefferson died with over $100,000 in debts. By today's standards, that's millions.

Also by today's standards, if Jefferson produced a document similar to the Declaration, "conservatives" would focus on the overthrow of the government part and say that Jefferson only advocated revolution because he didn't want to take responsibility for his bills.

In essence, Jefferson wouldn't be worth listening to because he didn't make a fortune as a businessman.

Thomas Jefferson was not a framer of the Constitution. Jefferson had a significant influence on the founding of the nation; albeit his ideas were not adopted by the framers of the Constitution. Jefferson was serving as Ambassador to France at the time of the Constitutional Convention; and except for his correspondence with some of the delegates, what resulted was largely the work of James Madison. (Even his draft Constitution and Declaration of Rights for Virginia was rejected in favor of the model of George Mason.) Jefferson’s main contribution was the Louisiana Purchase, which opened the way to westward expansion, and the rise of America to become one of the great nations of the world. The epitaph on his tomb recites: "Here was buried Thomas Jefferson, Author of the Declaration of American Independence, of the Statute of Virginia for religious freedom, & Father of the University of Virginia." He died bankrupt; but he nevertheless left a rich legacy for all of us.

Because Americans have fallen into the pattern of affirming people who make profits as being the virtuous.

That's not the case. IN fact, it seems like the entire left-wing has taken hold of the notion that profit is bad, corporations are evil, and all wealthy people should be punished. It is a fallacy that has spread to large segments of society.

The truth is that just as it is wrong to say all blacks are stupid because one has met one stupid black person it is also wrong to make generalizations about all profit, all corporations, and all wealthy people. Each case should be evaluated on its own merits; anything less is prejudice.
