The Truth About Presidents And Teleprompters

(CBS)

There’s one reason above all others that President Obama uses a teleprompter in delivering most of his speeches: he’s good at it.

Ronald Reagan was the same way. He was more at ease in reading his speech off the dual screens of a teleprompter than looking up and down at a speech text on his lectern

Not so, George W. Bush. He often got that nervous, deer-in-the-headlights look when giving an address from a teleprompter. He would seem stiff and ill-at-ease. He did not convey a sense of understanding.

“He preferred using large index cards,” said his one-time White House Press Secretary Ari Fleisher, “plus I think he was just more comfortable with the cards.”

It’s definitely a finely honed skill to deliver a speech from a teleprompter (seen in the top right corner of the above picture from Mr. Obama's speech today in Columbus, Ohio). It takes as much if not more focus or concentration than reading a paper copy.

Mr. Obama doesn’t always give a flawless teleprompter performance. He’ll occasionally stumble on a word or lose his place – but not often. And when the White House provides an advance text and reporters can follow along, Mr. Obama can be seen plowing his way through complicated run-on sentences without hesitation.

By using a teleprompter, a speaker can have greater eye contact with an audience – and that means a lot. Watch the network news anchors. You can tell when they’re using a teleprompter and when they’re not. If you watch their eyes, you can see them move – but not much. They wait for the words on the teleprompter screen in front of the camera lens to rise to their eye level to minimize eye movement.

Some critics say politicians who rely on teleprompters are more performers than leaders. But that really depends on what the politician says and how he says it. The teleprompter is merely a performance device. It doesn’t write the speech or control what is being said.

The danger in teleprompter use is that the speaker will be more focused on reading the words than in conveying a sense of understanding about what he’s saying.

Another danger is losing one’s place. If the teleprompter goes down or runs amok, every speaker needs to have the text of his remarks in front of him for that contingency.

Some think Mr. Obama may have a problem with that.

“I noticed he doesn’t flip pages with his text while using a prompter,” said Fleischer, a keen observer of such matters. “He better hope the prompter never fails.”

Fleischer recommends that Mr. Obama flip the pages of his paper text as he reads from the teleprompter so that if something goes wrong – his backup is ready to use.

I'm wondering if it is possible for the 2 mental midgets around here that keep beating that ignorant drum {ASUR & ALWAYS the Siamese twins for ***** SPEEK} to understand the simple basic FACT; that as far back as Lyndon B. Johnson, the presidents have utilized a teleprompter.

WHY, OH-WHY, that piece of factual information seems to have blown through that void that is your cranium is just the most amazing thing.

Should you ever GROW THE HELL UP and face the fact that your repetitive childish banter is just a continual cause for people to know HOW INCREDIABLY LAME YOU ARE, then and only then will I consider you worth while and a struggling youth in an adult mind field...but if not then you both are on IGNORE OPTION for me;)

of course not, that would be use of logic and at odds with attacking Obama.

Come on Pocket, he gave thanks to himself because he was reading someone else line. Not just no president in history has done that, I dont think any person in history has done that.

Another time he read the same thing twice and then stopped the press conference till the prompter could be fixed instead of just answering the questions.

Even people in his camp have said he depends on it too much.

Clinton did an entire state of the union without a prompter and did just fine.

I was pretty young so I dont know but Reagan might have depended too much on his too.

Its more of a joke thing than anything else. We have always laughed at dumb things presidents do.

People joked about Ford tripping, Nixons "I am not a crook!" Clintons sex problems, President Bush's difficulty in speech, for obama its his need of the telepromter.

When you are reduced to using one for trivial minutes long sessions you have crossed a line of incompetance.

And others, McCain for example or Tony Blair dont use them as they dont need them. They have command of the details and are smart enough to speak well off the cuff.

Obama is not in command of the details nor can he speak off the cuff at all.

Well, I'll give you 'KUDO's' for at least reading some of the 'golden oldy' posts around here...but your redundant snipes at our President will be as boringly lackluster as those repetitively constant mindless diatribes ILK of 'ALWAYS & ASUR'...get a new TUNE

when the US President speaks, his words carry world wide policy meaning...McCain speaks with out one...big deal...he also ends up with our troops fighting on the borders of 2 nations that don't border each other...and mixing up Sunni and Shia, and other such things..

Big Freaking deal he messed up on a tele and read the wrong line...do we really need to go threw the List of F ups from Bush Speeches? There is a reason he was regarded as a idiot around the world, and part of it was his speeches...even my some of my republican friends who liked him, had to stop listening to him, because they said he was pathetic to listen to.
