Kids are guaranteed all of that in California public schools, according to an obviously slanted blog? My kids both went to California schools, and neither of them received any of those guarantees. Moreover, I taught in the public schools for nearly four decades, and never, ever, was required to do any of the above. I was, however, expected to teach kids to understand what they read, to do basic math, and to write a paragraph that made some sense, along with those "critical thinking skills" mentioned above. Have things really changed that much in the past couple of years?
