Scuttling the Ship to Victory
October 20, 2008: I’ve had an odd feeling about the 2008 Presidential Campaign from very early on. Too many things about John McCain just quit adding up. I had always admired McCain precisely for the reasons the Republican Party seemed to want to lock him out. The power center of the Republican Party rejected McCain from Day 1, couple this by his seeming reversal on his long-held positions since 2000, his patience and demeanor of late, as though he was a changed man. Even his pick of Sarah Palin for VP seemed odd, none of these things seemed to add up. Then it hit me.
Rewind back to Summer 1999 and the 2000 Presidential Race. McCain was running against Bush and his cronies and he DESPISED them. They embodied everything he railed against at that time, corrupt special interests, campaign finance abuse and the Washington good old boy networks. McCain was an outsider and probably the closest thing to an honorable man in Washington, a town not known for honorable men. Alas, he lost the nomination and was forced to watch as the worst possible choice for President took power and proceeded to do just as he feared. He was even forced to endorse Bush for President. Can anyone who watches the film clip of this endorsement NOT see the bitterness McCain is clearly feeling? It is pretty obvious he is doing something repugnant to him that he feels he needs to do, like he is serving a higher goal.
Bush as predicted, went on to serve his special interest cronies trillions of dollars on a silver platter. There is absolutely no way the McCain was comfortable with any of this. No man of honor could possibly just sit and watch this happen, let alone participate without raising bloody hell about how wrong it was and continues to be. No man of honor would simply want to become the very thing he has fought against his entire career unless it was part of a higher ideal.
Some say he simply sold out. Again, this is not the path of a man of honor, a man of conviction, a military strategist who understands how to withstand years of torture in order to accomplish a higher goal. To reverse a 25 year history, at the end of his career just to become a lock-step member of the group he had openly despised for decades makes no sense. It seems so far beneath him and simply did not add up. An honorable man would aspire to do better, a veteran tactician would make a better plan, a man like John McCain would be willing to sacrifice himself before he would ever chose to sacrifice his ideals, his ideals saved his life in Hanoi when ideals meant more than life itself, let alone one man’s selfish desire for the Presidency.
We are witness to John McCain giving his life to defeat his enemy and the enemy of the people of the United States, namely the Oil Companies, the special interest lobbyists and the Carlisle Group. John McCain sacrificed his career voting history to align his voting record with the present administration in order to become the 2008 Republican candidate. He played the game, he walked the walk. He has demonstrated incredible self-control, not a trait he is known for, by parroting the lines and positions of these special-interest Republican Party handlers in order to become their candidate. He knew he could only defeat an enemy like his from within and that it would take a patient, intelligent plan. His plan is not to defeat the Republican Party but, to defeat the criminally-greedy corporations who have seized control of the Republican Party. The party itself is a victim as much as the American People have been and continue to be. John McCain will defeat his life-long special interest enemies in Washington and the first step is to hand the Presidency to Obama.
No one could better understand that the path to victory may lie in the act of scuttling one’s own ship in the harbor to defeat the enemy than a career Naval Officer. No honorable officer would ever sacrifice himself unless there was a far greater goal to be achieved. No soldier would use his last shot unless he could use it to defeat the true enemy.
John McCain is a patriot of the highest magnitude. He has known for many years that an evil group of corporations owned by greedy men have risen unchecked, to power in Washington and seized control of the Republican Party. He has carried out a brilliant plan to defeat his enemy and set in motion an opportunity for the American People to reject the corrupt special interests and retake Washington. He has done so by taking control of the Republican Warship and sinking it in the harbor.
I will honor this brilliant act of patriotism and cast a rare (for me) Democratic Party vote for Barak Obama for President of the United States. I will also support the work of cleaning the special interests out of Washington with each and every vote I cast in the days ahead. To clean up Washington, President Obama can count on my support and the support of his staunchest ally across the aisle in Washington D.C., Senator John McCain.
