I question the validity of this report. How could any adult Afghani not know of 9/11? I suspect most Aghanis are illiterate and most are ignorant of world affairs...after all they live in a barbaric 7th century Islamic sh*thhole of a nation.

James Michener wrote a book entitled "Caravans" - it is quite old, buy you can still find in in used book stores. Michener spent a lot of time in Afghanistan doing research on the book, and it is amazing to read the lifestyle of these people perhaps 30 years ago. They were nomads, and moved their camps from one place to the next to find grass for their goats. They routinely moved their whole camps on the back of camels. Illiterate, primitive, and obedient to their tribal leader.. and the tribal leader was obedient to the war lord.

They are completely isolated in the most rugged terrain on earth - so things like handphones and TV's have not exposed them to modern events. Plus they have been at war with the British, the Soviets, and now the US. There is no reason to expect them to be even close to becoming modern. At least places like Indonesia are exposed to tourists and outside influences because of trade.

It comes as no surprise for me to read these statistics. If you take the time to understand the culture of the people, it forces you to think.."How can we possibly do anything worthwhile in that country?' Far better we use black ops and drones to fight Al Qaeda - and leave the primitive people of that country alone to live their lives. They can't possibly harm the US if we didn't have troops there.

Okay, but 92% don't know??? Seems very high even for a nation of ignorant nomads.

I fully agree on the black ops approach. We need to get our troops out of there ASAP.

Even if it weren't 92%, 75% would still be amazing. Us Americans are famous for thinking ever culture in the world is more or less like our own! It ain't. Why do you think Osama bin Ladin had such an easy time to live there?

Only ignorant Americans think all cultures are like ours. And sadly, there are lots of ignorant Americans.

Liberal anti Americans want our culture to be like much of the rest of the world. And that is, a third world cesspool.

I don't know whether the 92% stat is correct or not, but it is certainly plausible. We are dealing with a society still stuck in the middle ages, and trying to impose a modern government by force of arms. No wonder they think we're out to destroy them.

Come on Pocket, you are slipping..not mostly Republicans, but "A majority of Democrats, Republicans and independents believe it's likely Saddam was involved."

Why would they have a good, educated, informed reason to "believe it is likely (NOT THOUGHT AS YOU SAID) that ousted Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein was personally involved in the Sept. 11 attacks?" Because, "President Bush and members of his administration suggested a link between the two in the months before the war in Iraq". I should add that was only 8 months after this 2003 article was published.

It should also be recalled that the Bush Administration made numerous, strong suggestions of a strong link between Hussein and Al-Qaeda http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saddam_Hussein_and_al-Qaeda.

So to be FAIR, American misconceptions were based on plausible information that the Administration provided. Not in the same league as blind ignorance as demonstrated by the vast majority of Afghans.

no, anyone who half paid attention, knew that Saddam had zero to do with it, there was no credible info that he did...the passports and where the hijacers where from was common news just days after the attack...almost all from S.Arabia...when polled, people also said the hijackers where from Iraq...America is ignorant...just because Bush CO. pushed the ignorant idea...does not make them less ignorant for believing it in the face of facts.

Most people who paid attention, knew that Bin Ladin, hated and wanted to take down Saddam...and Saddam is not the type to aid someone who could have toppled his power..and had the power to make it happen.

and those misconceptions continue, long after the facts have become known. There is no link between Saddam Hussain and the attack of 9/11.

And to think it only cost a trillion bucks or so of borrowed money, a little over four thousand soldiers' lives, a few more thousand suffering from everything from PTSD to traumatic brain injury, and an unknown number of Iraqi lives. In exchange, we have the satisfaction of having watched a tinpot dictator, one of many around the world, being hung.

Such a deal.
