putin does have a problem, which is why you hear him offering to negotiate more loudly.  He really needs an exit from the war that still leaves him in power.  Continuing to fight isn't going to do that, eventually russians won't support the "special military operation" and/or he'll run out of enough munitions that he'll start losing badly.
