STEUBENVILLE, Ohio (AP) — Two members of the high school football team that is the pride of Steubenville were found guilty Sunday of raping a drunken 16-year-old girl in a case that bitterly divided the Rust Belt city and led to accusations of a cover-up to protect the community's athletes.

Steubenville High School students Trent Mays and Ma'Lik Richmond were sentenced to at least a year in juvenile jail, capping a case that came to light via a barrage of morning-after text messages, social media posts and online photos and video. Mays was sentenced to an additional year in jail on a charge of illegal use of a minor in nudity-oriented material, to be served after his rape sentence is completed.

The two teens broke down in tears after the verdict was read and later apologized to the victim and to the community. Both were emotional as they spoke, and Richmond struggled at times to talk through his sobs. Richmond's father, Nathaniel, also asked that the victim's family "forgive Malik and Trent for the pain they put you through."

ass jury. You know why our founding fathers came up with a lawyer and jury system? It came from the bible idea. Wanna know why you can never go to hell? Cause Jesus forgives you. No matter how bad you did things on earth Jesus always forgives you and GOD can never send you to HELL!

The Whole system is corrupted is what im talking about. Why isnt Hinkley behind bars but hes getting royal treatment instead?

Raping a girl - reprehensible.
Posting it on the internet - incomprehensible.
Thinking you can get by with it - nonsensical.

A couple of stupid teen aged jocks... wait, that's a redundancy.

1 year isnt good enough. More like 10 years is more like it. Whatever happended to Jessicas law in Ohio? Isnt Jessicas law means 25 years if you commit it?

It applies to all. Lets face it,, If this happened in Florida or in Texas you would had got a much stiffer sentence.

while the outcome may have been different in FLA, its not due to this law which would not apply.

In Florida, another charge, capital sexual battery is defined as: A person 18 years of age or older who commits sexual battery upon, or in an attempt to commit sexual battery injures the sexual organs of, a person less than 12 years of age commits a capital felony. The charge carries a mandatory life sentence.[3]

Here is how CNN reported the incident:

After two teenagers were convicted on Sunday of raping a young girl in Steubenville, Ohio, a CNN correspondent lamented that it was “incredibly emotional, incredibly difficult” to watch the court proceedings. Only she wasn’t referring to the victim, or even to the crime, but to the “two young men that had such promising futures, star football players, very good students,” who “literally watched as they believed their lives fell apart.”

I saw a news show about this incident. Witnesses abound who claimed this girl went EVERYWHERE with these two guys, even though her friends BEGGED her not to go with them. She was never FORCED to go with them. They house-hopped all night. She hit on one of the guys all night. Witnesses saw this. Hmmm? Could this be some bitch who was pissed off that the assholes posted her in a drunken state on the internet, leading to her embarrassment, which is the REAL reason why they are being charged? Who knows?
